Comparison of 'identical' internal and external cards?

Hi everyone,

So, I was a bit curious if someone had made any comparison of running the same card, internally and externally, to compare the performance?

From what I understand, there is a small penalty for running the card externally, but then there has also been a lot of talk about that the GPU's in Macs don't actually have the same performance as their 'real' external counterparts.

So, what I'd like to see is a comparison of the iMac 5K Radeon Pro 580 and it's external model, and maybe the same thing with the new iMac Pro and Vega cards.

Also, should you expect the same external card to perform the same when used from different computers, like from a MBP, iMac 5K and iMac Pro?

Glad to hear your thoughts about this, or if you know of any articles that talks about this anywhere?

@marcus_christensen Using a Mac computer to compare internal GPU vs external GPU is not exactly apples to apples comparison. You may find some information in this thread with a purpose-built Thunderbolt 3 test bench.

What could be more Apple to Apple comparison, other then using a Mac to perform the tests? 😉

Joke aside, it was really interesting to read that thread, thanks for linking it.
