Are there any information about power peaks? Can 300W be enough?

They say peak is bit over 320W.

@itsage, it would be interesting to know  if Asus XG Station can wield it.

@oliverb I'd be interested in seeing benchmarks for all your GPU's in eGPU's...

I am not sure if you really want this 🙂 Perhaps s0me selection?

@oliverb Most likely the ASUS XG Station Pro will not be able to handle the Radeon VII. I will pick mine up this weekend to verify and report back.

@roedi78 @mac_editor cheers for the replies guys and the info! I'm not sure I can justify a new laptop right now (to get round any CPU bottlenecking) but lets see what this years updates brings... (I also have a 2016 15inch which I have never set up which obvs has a quad core CPU so might try that too).

For whatever it's worth, the Radeon VII seems to be playing nice with the Mantiz Venus (stock PSU) and a 2017 13'' MacBook Pro Touch Bar / bootcamp...

@eightarmedpet The 2016 15" MacBook Pro is a great eGPU host! It performs better than the 2018 13" QC MBP. Even though there's no "Large memory" allocation in Boot Camp, you can download pre-compiled DSDT for the particular dGPU your MBP has. Integrate that DSDT inside automate-eGPU EFI and you can resolve error 12 easily. I wonder with that TB3 to CPU routing, your LG UltraFine 5K may have better luck running alongside the eGPU.

Thanks for the video overview.  I'm a total noob at this but just bought an Akitio Node Pro and the AMD VII is to arrive today.  Solely to use with FCPX on 5K full spec iMac.  Everything I've read says: the card won't work on my machine until Mac OS update--but your video review at the end mentions use on MacPro and Boot Camp (which I don't use).  To confirm: it won't work with non- Boot Camp apps, yes?

@screendor There's no working drivers in macOS for the Radeon VII yet. You can only use it in Windows atm. Also I'd be cautious pairing it with the AKiTiO Node Pro. The PSU may not be able to handle the card.

Yes.  I was concerned about the PSU issue too (but I wanted 2 TB3 ports--didn't want the eGPU to be a dead end since the iMac only has 2 TB3 ports).  So I asked Akitio and here's what they said:

Re: Akitio Node Pro and AMD Radeon VII

Message: Hi Michael,

The suggestion for a 650W power supply is intended for a PSU that is used in a PC, because it also has to provide power to other parts. For the Node Pro, assuming that you don't daisy chain any bus-powered devices and you don't use the Node Pro to recharge your laptop, the Node Pro only uses about 10W of power. This means your graphics card can make use of more than 400W of power, which does indeed cover the 300W power consumption of the card you mentioned.

Regards,

Stefan

I don't intend to use the Node Pro to supply power to any additional devices--purely for a desktop editing system.  I initially got a Sonnet 650 but the single TB3 port was not a good fit with my workflow (to be specific, I have a second Apple Thunderbolt Display--which can only be fed through a Thunderbolt connection apparently).   So I'm hoping I can loop that display out of the Node Pro (with an adapter).  The remaining iMac TB3 port is connected to Promise Raid Drives.   Any thoughts/advice appreciated.

@screendor That makes sense. You can always upgrade the PSU if there's issue with powering the Radeon VII. No way to add a second Thunderbolt 3 port on an enclosure on the other hand.

@eightarmedpet I hope this time things will go much smoother. Take a look at this build when I used automate-eGPU EFI to run 2x RX 580 eGPUs with the 2016 15" MacBook Pro. I disabled the dGPU and attached iGPU to the internal display. It worked great and no error 12. You may not have to disabled the second TB3 controller like I did if you only use one eGPU.

Thanks @itsage for the reassurance.  And thanks too @eightarmedpet.  Your build looks fantastic.  And also scary to a noob like me.  When do you folks estimate Mac OS will natively support the Radeon VII?

That's why I am a smart-a** and have always (several) system backups on my NVMe SSD. The restore only needs 1min 45second to repair a completley spoiled windows (which happens quickly). The SSD has costed 40EUR, this is what I call "well invested money".

FWIW, the 7 card arrived yesterday, popped it into the Akitio node pro.  As expected, it doesn't work.  Still waiting for the Mac OS update with driver support.

On the plus side, the second TB3 port does allow me to pass through to my Apple Thunderbolt Display--so that works just fine (and why I went with the Node Pro over other models).

So: just waiting to be able to use the shiny new 10 pounds of heavy metal with my edit system.  Any guesses as to when Mac will support this card?

@screendor which Apple Thunderbolt Display do you have? And have you tried Bootcamp? @itsage you mentioned the Node Pro being a possible solution to for folks with Ultrafines - did you ever test pass through in Windows? I'd love a single cable solution...

Haven't tried bootcamp but--not a workable solution for me.  Looking to enhance my edit bay running FCPX so need to boot up in Mac OS.  If I was a gamer, I probably would be using Bootcamp.

I have a 4 year old Apple Thunderbolt Display ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display).  Unlike a lot of other monitors, it can ONLY be driven by a Thunderbolt connection (as far as I know).  My iMac only has two TB3 ports, so can't waste one driving the second display.  Thus, the need for an eGPU box with TB3 in and out--2 ports.  (Yes, I use a TB3 to TB1 adapter).

FWIW, the Node Pro so far seem perfect for my needs.  Just need  AMD 7 drivers in Mac OS!

Also:  I kinda got the Radeon 7 card on faith that it would deliver better results than the Vega 64 Frontier Edition when I'm editing using FCPX.  Who knows?  It was a leap of faith.  Although some gaming research seems promising:   https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2019-02-08-radeon-7-vs-vega-64-vega-56-benchmarks-7001

You can use a PCIe Riser (Ver009s) with an Alpine or Titan Ridge Card to get a TB3 output from a DisplayPort of your egpu. there are a tutorial in this forum.

I´m waiting for Radeon 7 Support for Mojave, and compare Vega FE vs Radeon VII in FCPx.

You can get the bios from ASRock. Here's a link:  http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/BIOS/VGA/Phantom%20Gaming%20X%20Radeon%20VII%2016G(190201)ROM.zip

I used the ASrock version on the PowerColor card and it updated just fine. ASRock was the first to deliver the BIOS update publicly. But I agree with you, now that there appears to be an AMD version, I would use that.

I've read/head here somewhere that the Radeon VII was very limited to a few hundred. This is of course completely nonsense. You can buy it everywhere.

@oliverb AMD had several ODMs build around 20K cards for this launch. They go to retail channel gradually but there's no shortage.

Dunno, maybe for you in the US where Amd stand.
But here in France it is not easy to get one, with prices ranging from 740€ to 850€.
Caseking Germany is selling them for 840€ piece, roughly 960$.

Clearly not a good deal!

This is always the same discussion, those things are always about 20% more expensive in EU than in US. The availability is very good, this is independent from price.

You maybe need a direct visual clue to understand something, so here you go!
Also if something is normal for you, luckily it does not mean that it is normal for others!

These are the two main reseller in France, i see no availability here:

https://www.materiel.net/recherche/radeon-vii/

https://www.ldlc.com/navigation/radeon+vii/

Here an Amazon search in France:

https://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=radeon+Vii

Ho i forgot, maybe you want another EU country i can care about like Italy:

https://www.trovaprezzi.it/prezzo_schede-grafiche_radeon_vii.aspx

So yeah great availability and clearly a decent price in these two country.
Or you can order to Caseking in Germany for 840e, pretty sure our friend overclocker Der8auer will be quite happy about!
Don't delay buy today!

"Plenty" is not exactly the word i would use, since the availability of the cards is equal to your hand fingers.
But you can use "plenty" to describe the amount of $ one would spend, in this case 750 pound for a whooping 1000$.

Be useful to other user, that others can get a real true picture of the actual market.
This often help other to decide when buy and follow the market!

@wimpzilla, plenty is exaclty the correct word, all big Germen electronic stores sell it and they say they have the stock full. Alternate, Cyberport, Mindfactory, everything. It's acutally very easy to get, at least here in Germany.

I can't speak of German/EU availability but right now I have the option to buy a few models on Overclockers and Amazon, with simply "in stock" listed on Amazon (no limit) and a Sapphire model sitting in my basket at what is sub retail price of £620, which is very very tempting...

If you are genuinely interested I'd be happy to buy for you @wimpzilla and ship it out, I'll even through in a couple of chill pills....  😉
