Dell 8K Monitor (UP3218K) with eGPU (Vega 64) in MacOS & Win10
does anyone know about Dell 8K Monitor compatibility with Vega 64 egpu in MacOS & Win10?
Macbook Pro 15 2017
Asus XG Station Pro
Asus Vega 64 Strix
planned purchase: Dell UP3218K
2017 MacBook Pro 15, Dell UP3218K, ASUS XG Station Pro, ASUS AMD Vega 64 Strix, Win10 1709
Wow, didn't know they had one of those. £4k.
Assume it requires 2xDisplayPort connectors to operate?
The VEGA 64 would seem to support it as it's the same spec as the Radeon Pro WX 9100 which touts 8k support all over the place.
What I'd want to know is can the Dell 8k display work with any lower resolutions and scale them. e.g. 4k from a MacBook Pro 15 inch 2017 from the Thunderbolt? Or even use 5k and scale it up to fill? No manual to download.
I only wanted a proper 5k display to replace my Apple Cinema 30 inch. But 8k does muddy the waters a bit 🙂
I've certainly had my money's worth from the Cinema 30 and I've looked after it well. It's seen off Mac Pro G5, Mac Pro Intel 2:1, Mac Pro 5:1, and several MacBook Pro's since including a 2012, 2015 and it's now on a MBP 2017 all as full time computers.
The DVI-Dual connector has been awesome. I'm afraid to buy a monitor that has a stupid connector that they'll kill off in 3 months time.
Is the Display Port connector a safe bet? I think it might be.
I'm currently plugging my Cinema 30 directly into DVI-D on an AMD Radeon RX 580 8GB inside an eGPU box. Something you simply can't do with a monitor with "Thunderbolt" of any type (I don't believe).
I also have a Belkin Thunderbolt 2 dock that has mini DisplayPort that plugs into the Cinema 30's externally powered Apple mini DP to DVI-D.
Hi, I asked the same question about this 8K Dell UP3218K but regarding Thunderbolt 3 enclosure generally and the Sonnet Puck 560/570 especially, here: https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-enclosures/drive-the-8k-display-dell-up3218k-fed-via-two-dp1-4-using-sonnet-puck-560-570-or-other-solution-thoughts-comments/ any thoughts/comments please let me know.
