Good morning all,

I am building an eGPU for my 2012 Mac mini i7 2.6Ghz which I only use for photo processing. It remains very efficient with 16GB of Kingston Impact RAM in CL9 and 2 512GB SSD in Raid 0 under Mojave. There is only the graphics part that is worth IGP Intel HD4000. I want to overcome this with an eGPU, I recently bought a used AKITIO Thunder2 PCIe Box, I changed the original fan of the box (noisy) by a perfectly silent NOCTUA NF-A6x25 FLX, bought a power supply 12v 10a to replace the original 60w, to be able to supply the 75w to the PCIe slot.

For the choice of cards (not for playing), I want a card powered only by the PCIe port, supported by the Mac OS, and which leaves enough room between the GPU and the NOCTUA fan my choice is moving towards :

SAPPHIRE PULSE RX550 640SP 2 GB - 158 x 112 x 28 mm - Single+ slot - 65w

SAPPHIRE PULSE RX550 640SP 4 GB - 158 x 112 x 28 mm - Single+ slot - 65w

Normally the RX550 are not supported by Mac OS, however this model has a Baffin and non Lexa GPU and its internal ID is identical to the RX560 and is seen by the system as the latter.

Or :

MSI RX 560 AERO ITX 2 GB OC - 155 x 113 x 39 mm - Dual slot - 60w

MSI RX 560 AERO ITX 4 GB OC - 155 x 113 x 39 mm - Dual slot - 60w

So here are my questions :

- I would like to size the power of the card as best as possible in relation to my use, so an RX550 would be sufficient for use with photo software: Photo Mechanic, Dxo PhotoLab, Affinity Suite, Topaz AI Gigapixel (the latter greedy in resource is used punctually, and the results in CPU are better than in GPU, therefore not determining), ...

- The consumptions of the cards indicated are the maximum. Also, I would like to know if using a card with more memory consumes more, and how much ?

- Mojave is very stable, I'm very happy with that. Catalina brings better support for eGPUs including Bootscreen. Is this true with the cards cited above ?

- My Mac mini and Thunderbolt 1 (TH1), also the more powerful the card and the greater the loss, so is it better to take an RX550 or an RX560?

I plan to use the eGPU with PurgeWrangler, and in therm with Kryptonite which looks very promising.

Thanks to you and especially to the programmers who allow eGPU on our "old" macs.

@le-tof, just get RX 560 if price differences are minor.

  • Negligible.
  • Only true for 2018 Mac mini I think.
  • Not necessarily the case. Better card in general will net you better performance. Just get the better card. All this assuming price isn't a concern.

Thank you @mac_editor, for these answers and especially for your work. I go on an MSI RX 560 AERO ITX 4 GB OC, it is true that the prices of the cards are carried away, because of mining it seems. It will be a used purchase, I still haven't found it. As soon as this is done, I will put my eGPU build on the site.
