The product page for RTX 2080 Ti is up. I spotted a USB-C port. The full specs of RTX 1070/1080 show USB Type C output as well.

Turing GPUs are designed with hardware support for USB Type-C and VirtualLink. VirtualLink is a new open industry standard being developed to meet the power, display, and bandwidth demands of next generation VR headsets through a single USB-C connector.

Expecting it to not work with macOS right away, at least if we go by how long it took to add Pascal support to their drivers.  Hopefully wrong on that part.  Expecting it to work in Windows right away... I hope at least.

It was a 7 month wait for GTX 9XX cards to have macOS drivers. GTX 10XX was 11 months.

Keep in mind this is USB-C output. It's not Thunderbolt 3 so 5K UltraFine is still a no-go.

Yeah, I'm purely interested in eGPU performance for external monitor gaming.  Nothing fancy like a 5k Thunderbolt display for me at the moment.

I might buy one to test and send back if its no use, because... and I'm prob wrong...

Although it says USB C  it may actually have TB3 bandwidth and therefore work (at 4k)
Why would they not just say TB 3? Because all other monitors are USB C.
Why would it have the same bandwidth? Because its also for VR Link which has the bandwidth for a 4K display at 60hz.

Do I know what I'm talking about? Prob not.

So it only has one HDMI port? I'll have to buy an HDMI splitter to use my Rift then I guess.

DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor should work if you want to use multiple HDMI displays or for VR.

Yes it was a nightmare and also Nvidia drivers were useless with constant crashing and freezing. Main reason for selling my old home made eGPUs with 970 and 1070. The switched to AMD and being happy.
if you don’t need all this GPU power on macOS just buy a Radeon Vega 56 wich works with about alll eGPU boxes, simply plug and macOS recognize it. Drivers are stable, Metal is faaast. Also when new AMD drivers will be out performance will not be awesome as always has been.
@eightarmedpet
thinking of you mate, if you don’t need this awesome new performance try a Radeon you will have much less headaches.

@ikir it’s AMD cards that cause my problems (in Bootcamp).

I wish I could just stick to macOS but most the games are windows, I’d snap up a Vega card right away otherwise.

Oh and yeah, totes agree, Nvidia drivers are crap in macOS.

The 4K is USB C rather than TB 3 so it should... I am still holding on to some hope the 5K will too.

I have high hopes for you too!

I’m happy that I may finally have a solution for direct connect my 4k display w/usb c.

But it I hope it works for you as well.  I did notice the specs shows it supports a resolution of 7680x4320. So you may be right.  Why would they create a GPU that supports said resolution but then provide connection ports which don’t support the band width.   It would not make sense but who knows I know nothing.  Here’s  hoping.

Has anybody tried? I'd be extremely interested in knowing if it works on any of the RTX's

Does anybody own this?

If so, what happens if you attach a USB thumb drive to the USB-C port with an adapter? Or something like a Samsung T5 SSD?

Theoretically it should work - because VirtualLink is the equivalent of shoving USB 3.1 and 4 lanes of DisplayPort into a USB-C cable. It was previously not possible as the DisplayPort lanes consumed all of the SS lines and only USB 2.0 was left. However, the updated USB specifications now allow for additional wires in the USB-C cable to be repurposed, and are used in VirtualLink to provide another set of wires (Thunderbolt 3 could theoretically add a third 20Gbps lane for 60Gbps). It will clearly require e-marked cables as the previous cables did not use high quality conductors where they were not needed. So it will have to check that the cable is designed for it.

The bottom line is somehow these graphics cards must provide USB connectivity somehow. I cannot find any PCI IDs listed for Nvidia USB controllers in the region of the PCI IDs for the GPUs. But an owner can easily find out if a USB controller appears as another PCI function number, like the graphics display audio does.

Linux and Windows: "lspci -vnnt"

For Windows, you need to download PCI Utils for Windows first, and need to run it with elevated privileges (whereas Linux does not require root).

Cheers!

@karatekid430 Yes USB-C devices can connect to the TB3 host via the RTX GPU VirtualLink/USB-C port. Here are some screen captures.

Bad news for us 5K owners... I've had confirmation it doesn't work via someone on the Nvidia reddit who is using an LG Ultrafine 5K with his PC build (via an Alpine ridge card).

The day FE 2080's are available to buy too... le sigh.

Can we see more information for device 1AD8 (XHCI controller) and 10F8 (HDA controller) and 1AD9 (Serial bus controller)?

For 5K, if it's a Thunderbolt display then you'll need to continue using a Thunderbolt add-in card. If it's USB-C like the LG UltraFine 4K or newer DisplayPort 1.4 displays then it should work. New Thunderbolt displays that use the Titan Ridge chip may also work since the Titan Ridge can accept USB-C input.
