@eJony

MacOS/Bootcamp(MBP2018 15") + Razer Core X/Radeon VII:
Fans full blast on sleep or power off, until disconnection or enclosure power down

Windows/Fedora 29(X1 Tablet Gen 3) + Mantiz Venus/Radeon VII:
Everything works normally.

Will try with X1 Tablet Gen 3 + Razer Core X/Radeon VII this weekend.

X1 Yoga Gen3, X1 Tablet Gen 3, MacBook Pro 15" 2018
Razer Core X / Mantiz Venus
Asrock Radeon VII, Zotac Nvidia 1080Ti Amp Core Extreme, Powercolor Vega 56 reference (flashed to V64 bios)

@kelvin_tan The Mantiz Venus + Radeon VII doesn't run the fans full blast but it stays on when the connected Mac is asleep/off. While it's better than having loud noise, it's not working properly still.

Thanks @Kelvin_tan. Maybe we need a firmware change for the Radeon VII rather than a firmware change for the Core X? Looking forward to your feedback.

I know my interest here is limited primarily to FCPX, but results so far are very good.  The rig is stable and really able to handle anything I'm throwing at in normal editing--doesn't kludge down and/or crash like the 580.

@itsage so maybe is the driver that it is still beta.

An interesting tangent I noticed yesterday, is that Razer recently updated their tech specs pages for both the Core X and Core v2, and both of them list Radeon VII as qualified gpu's.  They also added the RTX cards to both lists as well.  The Mac compatible list still doesn't show Radeon VII, for obvious reasons being beta only and all.

Even though my HL23T's 300W PSU is not powerful enough for Radeon VII, it behaves correctly when the TB3 cable is unplugged or when I put Mac to sleep, fans are not spinning at all. No sleep mode with my DIYed Seasonic 500W PSU because the 3-pin is disconnected, always stays on and fans spinning silently. With Asus XG Station Pro the fans are running at full speed.

@itsage Welp you were right, the Mantiz Venus only half worked. I think it has something to do with the card rather than the enclosure.

Mantiz Venus + Radeon VII

  • Macbook Pro 15" 2018 (left rear TB3 port)
    • Sleep:  Fans low speed, card lights on
    • Shutdown:  Fans full blast, card lights on
  • X1 Tablet Gen 3
    • Sleep: Fans low speed, card lights on
    • Shutdown: Fans full blast, card lights on

Razer Core X + Radeon VII

  • Macbook Pro 15" 2018 (left rear TB3 port)
    • Sleep:  Fans full blast, card lights on
    • Shutdown:  Fans full blast, card lights on
  • X1 Tablet Gen 3
    • Sleep: Fans full speed, card lights on
    • Shutdown: Fans full blast, card lights on

It probably has something to do with the Radeon VII firmware detection of power state, or a firmware issue on the card itself. Let's hope AMD pushes out some updates to resolve this.

I installed 10.14.5 Beta 2 just now. Mantiz Venus + Radeon VII turns off and remains quiet when I shut down 2018 Mac mini. Sleep mode behaves like Beta 1. The Mac mini would go to sleep but Radeon VII stays on and fans run moderately, not full speed.

I can confirm exactly the same behaviour with Beta 2 on my Razer Core X with Radeon VII. Sleep occurs with fans running just above half speed. Still too noisy to ignore!
