Not sure it it's worth the upgrade for gaming, because I'm not a gamer, but for compute. Definitely.
A single VII is like 2 Frontiers worth of compute from the benchmarks I've run. For software that makes proper use of it, it's pretty amazing.

So how do you like it? I bought the VII +Core X but gave up and stuck with my 2080 because it seemed complicated to get it all running. I’m on a 15” 2018 MBP

What software do you use?

Im waiting for official bootcamp support but not sure when that will be. So I'm unsure if I should try it again.

Question; when you uninstall the AMD drivers for the GPU that’s inside the MBP, does that prohibit you from using bootcamp without the egpu? I use Windows on-the-go but also would like to dock at home for more power.

Another question; when Apple (or whoever) eventually supports the VII without the workarounds, will they just update seamlessly or will the maintenance after getting this done be as complicated? I don’t mind to do these guides to get everything running if I only have to do it once. But I can’t afford to spend the time poking around and tweaking if it breaks every time a Windows update comes out or something of that nature. Thanks!

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

This is a general statement regarding the Radeon VII for external graphics use. I have tried this card in macOS, Windows, and Linux and it's not ready. The fans would run full speed when the connection with the host computer is suspended. Same behavior with laptop as well as desktop across different brands and enclosures. If you're on the fence whether to buy it, I would say to wait for driver/firmware improvements.

I see that there's a new developer beta out today.  Any changes re: Radeon VII?

with a Core X, fans are still revving up when put to sleep. No noticeable changes for me.

Are you guys talking about the Core X fans or the Radeon VII fans revving up on sleep?  If it's the Core X, does this not happen with other cards?

@robin_martin  … question about your setup? here is how I currently have mine... MBPro connected to core x with type c, core x connected to the ben q monitor directly with displayport. Then the MBPro connected (opposite side of MBP - type c port) to my Caldigit with type c cable, hdmi cable from the caldigit to the ben q. I'm  asking because you have a similar setup and I'm wondering if this is the most effective setup? Also, as far as the radeon drivers go are you running the latest from AMD or the 19.3.3 from matt HD? Just wondering cause all the sudden I'm getting a code 12 again out of no where? thanks in advance!

@p_gartner That’s pretty much what I’m doing, except for DisplayPort instead of HDMI out of the CalDigit. I’m still using the stock Radeon Adrenalin drivers. I haven’t messed with the other ones yet.

@juan_c_yunis I just setup the Core X with Radeon VII last night.  I have it connected to a 2017 13" MBP (no Touch Bar) in clamshell mode running macOS 10.14.5 beta 3.  I haven't experienced the fan revving issue when putting to sleep yet, but I will continue monitoring.  I did perform an NVRAM reset after installing the beta.  Not sure if this made a difference.
