Radeon VII eGPU fans run full speed in sleep mode
Many who have tried the AMD Radeon VII in an eGPU enclosure experienced this fan issue, I wanted to start a topic to collect different enclosure configurations. Of all the enclosures I have for testing, the Netstor HL23T-Plus is the only one working properly in both macOS and Windows. I can set the host computer to sleep with Radeon VII eGPU connected and the fans turn off as expected. Other enclosures would send the fans go full speed. So far Razer Core, Core X/Chroma, AKiTiO Node Pro, Sonnet Breakaway Box suffer this issue. The Mantiz Venus doesn't fully go to sleep with this card so the enclosure and eGPU fans remains running at idle speed. I'm wondering with Power Delivery from the enclosure makes a different. I will test with the ASUS XG Station Pro and AKiTiO Node again. If you're currently using the Radeon VII eGPU, please share your finding.
Radeon VII, Razer Core v2, no full speed fans on sleep, in Windows or MacOS. The process to enter sleep takes longer than I would expect to (often upwards of 20 or 30 seconds), and often times it will sleep, then wake for 30s immediately after sleeping (with the fans running but not at max), then sleep normally. Over the course of several hours, it will sometimes wake for 30s, light and spin up, then go back to sleep. Overall behavior is close enough to normal I find it to be acceptable.
Firmware Rev 26.1 on both controllers.
Razer Core X, Radeon VII, Mac Mini 2018. Fans blow at 70% speed during sleep. On the first Beta that supported the Radeon VII, the fans would spin at full speed however the next Beta release somehow dropped the speed to 70%.
I have read your review of the Netstor HL23T-Plus. Thanks! I also notice that it is not available for sale yet
I'm quite desperate to have a fully working system as this is my work PC and not being able to sleep has been a giant pain. Will the Radeon VII fit in this enclosure straight out of the box or are there mods that will be required first? Also, any thoughts when it might be available and from where?
Thanks in anticipation!
I've tested the ASUS XG Station Pro with the Radeon VII yesterday. Unfortunately there's sleep fan issue. So it's not linked to whether Power Delivery from enclosure is 15W. I also tried different Macs to figure out whether Alpine Ridge vs Titan Ridge TB3 controller makes a difference. That did not change sleep fan issue.
Many thanks for the information. Apparently it was announced late last year but still hasn't acheived GA. I have worked with Netstor in the storage space before and they have an excellent reputation for pushing out fully tested components. Perhaps the delay has occured due to the intracacies of the Radeon VII
I'm happy to wait for a "no more hassles" solution.
@crhendo The culprit is the communication between the USB-C controller to the Radeon VII during sleep/suspended mode. I tried with ASUS XG Station Pro and original Razer Core this weekend and the Radeon VII suffered full fan speed. NetStor HL23T-Plus is the only enclosure working properly with the Radeon VII for me.
I'm pleased to advise that the first shipment of NetStor HL23T-Plus enclosures will be arriving in Australia on Friday. For fellow Australians who are interested, they can be purchased from Silicon Memory although this model has still not made an appearance on their web page. I have placed an order and will take delivery early next week.
Many thanks to @itsage for highlighting his recent success with this enclosure in the macOS environment. I am really looking forward to return to a normal workflow again with sleep being a valid option for end of day tasks.
