Radeon VII eGPU fans run full speed in sleep mode
Have just received and now installed my brand new NetStor HL23T-Plus enclosure (with my Radeon VII inside) and am VERY relieved to advise that finally my Mac Mini can sleep in total silence.
@itsage Thanks again for your ongoing contributions.
I do not have this issue with my mac mini running .295 with the Core X and the Rad VII using the latest AMD optional build (though it was fine before). I can record a video.... the ONLY time I was having this issue was with the bootcamp drivers version with my MBP!
I just purchased a new Mac mini 2018, Razer Core X, and Radeon VII. I've run the last month's OS from Mojave to Catalina with updates and the Core X consistently goes into full fan mode as soon as the mini goes to sleep. Any interaction to get the awaken the mini and the Core X fans turn off. I've spent time with Razer customer support and they've pointed out that the Core X does not support the Radeon VII at this time.
I'm loving the performance but the fan is beyond annoying. My solution, at this time, is to "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off". This is not what I would prefer but it does keep the fan off.
I know this is not a unique corner case but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it!
I recently got a second Radeon VII [Newegg sale]. Over the weekend I did a sleep test by pairing two Radeon VII to a Mac. The only difference is the eGPU enclosure. One Radeon VII was in the NetStor HL23T-Plus. The other Radeon VII was installed in different eGPU enclosures (AKiTiO Node/Pro, ASUS XG Station Pro, Mantiz Venus, Razer Core V2, and Sonnet Breakaway Box). I tried with 2013 Mac Pro and 2018 Mac mini running macOS 10.15.2 Dev Beta 1. Radeon VII worked properly in sleep as expected inside the NetStor HL23T-Plus. The Mantiz Venus went into a pseudo sleep mode when it goes into idle mode when the host system is asleep and hence Radeon VII stays on and idle. The other eGPU enclosures would send the Radeon VII fans running full speed when the host system goes to sleep.
I realize I'm bumping a slightly older thread. I do have this issue as well. Fans max out and blast at 100% in sleep. But the "weird" part if you want to call it that is that it blasts and then goes to quiet then blasts again intermittently. Definitely would like a fix. I'll assume I'll have to boot into Windows 10 and find firmware if it exists in order to fix it.
I found on another forum someone said the cooling connector on the card wasn't fully seated: " Problem solved without RMA, the cooling connector on the GPU was not connected fully. While I do feel a bit silly for checking on the GPU so late, I wouldn't expect something on it not to be fully functional right out of the box. I would certainly expect me not installing the GPU correctly, but that was ruled out long ago. So if anyone has similar issues, check the bottom-right corner of the GPU (while facing the fans) and push down on the wired connector. This is not supposed to move or be removed at any point in time but due to shipping it might dislodge slightly."
@julioleon, Unfortunately that's a known issue with the Radeon VII firmware. The only two enclosures I've found to be able to manage the Radeon VII in sleep mode is NetStor HL23T-Plus and Razer Core V2.
