During home office I would like to get 4k resolution from my HP EliteBook 8570p with i7-3520M and 16GB RAM on my 4k 40' tv. I work on Ubuntu Budgie in latest version 20.04.
I have ordered GDC EXP 8.5c with Expresscard cable and after 1.5 months it arrived. Meantime I bought Chieftec A80 PSU to the set.
First I tested my gdc exp with card from my current children PC: Radeon HD7750: but the card didn't start immediately during system booting, switching ATX PW didn't helped. If I inserted expresscard to laptop after boot the card fan started. But Ubuntu Budgie didn't noticed the new card. I also tested it on Linux Mint started from pendrive and it also did not noticed the card.
I'm thinking about buying another card: GTX950 or GTX1050TI: the price / performance ratio seems to be more attractive in the second, but I'm affraid if GTX1050TI would be more problematic. I know about error 43 on windows, but are there additional problems on ubuntu with the 10xx cards? If there is no way out I can buy GTX1060, that seems to be more recommended, but it is a bit more expensive. Or should I buy some card from AMD? What do you recommend?
Regards
Grzegorz
Ps. after the pandemic, I will give new card to my children instead old Radeon

.@grzesiek_danowski, if you’re just going to use windows rx 570 will do. I have the same setup through exp gdc and expresscard with my thinkpad w530...

.if your card is recognized by linux you can try the following which will tell which gpu will run the glxspheres64 program...
DRI_PRIME=0 glxspheres64
DRI_PRIME=1 glxspheres64
Optirun glxspheres64
Primusrun glxspheres64
In my case,
Optirun runs my dedicated nvidia gpu
Primusrun runs my internal Intel HD 4000 gpu
DRI_PRIME=1 runs my RX 570
Note that I'm using bumblebee driver for my Optimus Nvidia Dedicated Card and Intel hd4000.
RX 570 driver is installed out of the box in Manjaro.
So when I run any program I just insert optirun, primusrun or DRI_PRIME=1 before the program name.
What's sad is my fps for RX 570 4gb is capped at 25fps Ultra and high under heaven benchmark through internal display
I don't use external monitor.
While under windows 10 I get 49fps capped under ultra and high with heaven benchmark also internal display...
It may be easier to setup an nvidia card though goodluck to your upcoming card!
