Late 2017 13" HP Spectre x360 + GTX1050Ti@16Gbps-TB3>TB2 (AKiTiO Thunder2) + Win10 [Yukikaze]
Got my hands on an Ash Silver Spectre x360 today: i7-8550U, 16Gb of RAM, 512Gb SSD, 1080p screen. We bought this from HP.com during the Black Friday sales. It was more expensive than the silver version at Best Buy, but the gold accented dark grey version was too pretty to pass up. Vanity! It is a truly stunning laptop, though. Might well be the prettiest tech device I've ever gotten to lay my eyes (and dirty paws) on.
In any case, I cleaned it up from all the crap installed on it by HP and hooked it up to my Thunder2 housing a Gigabyte GTX1050Ti via the Apple TB3 to TB adapter. This setup is trivially plug-and-play: Connect the eGPU, install drivers, reboot, and off you go. I ran some benchmarks on the internal screen to put the machine through its paces and see that it all functions properly.
I then dug up my T430s results from the deep past to compare. Both used exactly the same eGPU enclosure and card in these runs, but the runs were on an external monitor in the case of the T430s, and both on external and the internal on the x360.
[Cloud Gate] T430s + GTX1050Ti over Thunderbolt1 - External: 10,001 Overall, 24,006 Graphics, 3,288 Physics.
[Cloud Gate] x360 + GTX1050Ti over TB3>TB2 - Internal: 14,262 Overall, 29,438 Graphics, 5,086 Physics.
[Cloud Gate] x360 + GTX1050Ti over TB3>TB2 - External: 16,071 Overall, 35,257 Graphics, 5,533 Physics.
[Sky Diver] T430s + GTX1050Ti over Thunderbolt1 - External: 11,298 Overall, 15,521 Graphics, 4,793 Physics.
[Sky Diver] x360 + GTX1050Ti over TB3>TB2 - Internal: 14,852 Overall, 19,045 Graphics, 6,912 Physics.
[Sky Diver] x360 + GTX1050Ti over TB3>TB2 - External: 15,510 Overall, 19,927 Graphics, 7,223 Physics.
Despite running over TB2, rather than the full TB3, and despite the much lower base-clock, the high-turbo, 8th gen i7-8550U thrashes the old 3rd gen i7-3520M by every metric, while consuming less than half the power. Technology is neat.
EDIT: Added external monitor results to the x360.
