eGPU rendering on USB?

Hi all,

So I roamed this forum, but did not yet find a solid answer to my question.

I’m considering eGPU for iray rendering, using an Geforce card with a bunch of cuda cores. My laptop only has USB 3, no TB. How big of an issue is bandwidth?
I figured, once the scene is loaded in the GPU’s VRAM and the cores are kicking in, not much bandwidth is needed. The only data swapped are rendering results. So, unlike gaming, bandwidth is of far less importance when you’re using your GPU for rendering. And I’m not much of a gamer anyway.

Is my assumption right? Is a eGPU on USB 3 more feasible for rendering purpose only?

Thanks ahead for any input on this matter!

JK

I was about to give you shit for asking a question that gets asked every week and has been answered in numerous threads, just did a google to snidely link you to only to find these...

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1030592-razer-told-me-their-egpu-will-work-on-normal-usb-c-should-i-not-believe-this/

Top returns, one obviously written by an idiot who has just copied other resources and made some mistakes and one from someone who was told by the manufacture that their product would work on USB-C, which it will not.

So, with that said, the info out there is a shit show, ignore it all, the folks on here have genuine experience and knowledge.

To answer your question, no, USB-C egpus dont exist/work.

As eGPU gains popularity in the past couple of years, more and more websites cover this topic. Problem is the writers are not always knowledgeable but feel the needs to put something together to get clicks and affiliate links.

@itsage aye, thats exactly what it looks like that guy has done, if its even a real person, copy and paste other articles and use the right tags to get to the top of the ranking. I can see how it is confusing for new users...

@jktoday , USB 3 does not provide a raw PCIe transport mechanism required by GPUs. So eGPU attachment is not possible on a USB port.

The common interfaces that do support eGPU attachment can be seen by the tabs on the buyer's guide:

@nando4 thanks for your answer.

As noted there is a lot of coverage on egpu on the internet, but some inconsistent or questionable. Like a claim TB3 be connected to USB 3 with an adapter, which brought me here to verify. Good thing I did.

Guess I need to buy a laptop with TB3 first.

How do you know this with this certainty? Have you personally tried all solutions by yourself? Everybody can see that the cable fits perfectly...
