HDD Caddy upgrade - not booting after restart

So I've replaced the optical drive on my hp2560p with a generic second hard drive caddy

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Generic-Drive-Caddy-Elitebook-2570p/dp/B00FO4XCT8

but for some unknown reason it now hangs on boot after a restart. A hard restart is fine but this obviously involves holding down the power button then restarting which is a bit of a faff.  The same applies if it goes into sleep mode.

There is not currently a second hard drive installed, it's just the empty caddy and all is fine if the caddy is removed.

I've not come accross this before, any ideas?

Try switching your primary HDD into the caddy and booting. The caddy should be populated with a drive (SSD or HDD) before use.

It turns out this was quite common on a lot of notebook models from various manufacturers with these generic caddys.

It's related to the diagnostic pin in the caddy's sata connector. Some have an internal switch to disconnect the pin, in ones without it needs taping over or just pulling out.
