I'd like to start the discussion on i7-11370H/i7-11375H Tiger Lake laptops for eGPU use. They are supposedly a higher performing version of U-CPU Tiger Lake ultrabooks. Best Buy has one of the first i7-11370H laptops, ASUS TUF Dash F15 available earlier this week in the US. I picked up the model with RTX 3070, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD.

The results so far with RTX 3080 Gaming Box are impressive. Thanks to the larger footprint, the cooling system can keep the boost clock going for a sustained period of time. Another huge improvement is the integrated Thunderbolt 4 controller. The Thunderbolt eGPU connection in this laptop is as good as Ice Lake and Tiger Lake U-CPU hosts.

The only disappointment is no PCIe 4.0 support for the M.2 NVMe slots. Due to the discrete graphics card, the M.2 slots are going through the chipset/PCH which is still PCIe 3.0. I was hoping that wasn't the case so I could test ADT-Link R43SG through a PCIe 4.0 slot. I went as far as opened the bottom cover to install a Samsung 980 Pro to test.

Hopefully we'll see a laptop with i7-11370H/i7-11375H processor without dGPU.

Great news you have a TB4 11th H CPU system. Am curious on Firestrike Physics performance and Forza 4 benchmarks on TB4 vs M.2. Would like to see if these H CPUs have optimized their performance compared to 8th-10th gen which performed whose eGPU performance worsened compared to 6th-7th gen H CPUs. Can compare against results of the build in my sig.

@nando4, Will definitely run Forza 4 to see the difference in this new 11th gen H-CPU laptop. Here are some numbers in Fire Strike and Cinebench R23. The Physics score is actually higher during eGPU vs dGPU.

You could see how relatively flat the CPU clock trend line was during Fire Strike. Temps were consistently in high 60 Celsius degrees during the most active runs. I'm putting together a build soon.

It looks like based on reports even the i5-11400H (6c/12t), i7-11800H (8c/16t) and above are going to have embedded TB4 support. Looks like we might finally be exiting the era of external-to-cpu thunderbolt controllers for Intel CPUs. I am imagining we're going to be seeing some i5-11400H laptops with no dGPU, since that was typically the only one that didn't have dGPU. Usually all the i7 high core count 10th gen had them.

I'm specifically keeping my eye out for an XPS 17 refresh of the base model that currently has an i5-10300H hopefully with an i5-11400H and TB4. That might be a great snag for eGPU.

The upcoming Xaiomi RedmiBook Pro 15 is going to have an i7-11370H. I recall previous Xaiomi notebooks were hard to get in the US though (and if you could, you would have to forego warranty support as it was grey market import) so unfortunately that might not be for me. But now that I'm reading that the entire H series all the way up to i7-11800H and above are going to use embedded TB4 support I might have to hold out to see what will be releasing later this year before I jump into any 4c/8t parts. If I can snag a 6c/12t part at least that would be a HUGE win.

@odin, I've learnt to not buy the very top configuration of a computer. The middle configuration is the best value and likely the one you could get the most performance of out. This very ASUS TUF Dash F15 model with RTX 3070, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD is not what I would recommend buying. The model with RTX 3060 for $300 less is the one to get [Best Buy Pre-Order]. That one doesn't come out until second week of March.

Agreed. I'm thinking the 6c/12t i5-11400H might be a great option if anyone actually uses it. Hopefully it's not the i5-11300H (has to be 4c/8t if the i7-1137x is..) that gets the lion's share of design wins. Those 4 extra threads could help a lot in modern games with more advanced multithreaded architectures.

Thanks. I'll be following your eGPU findings here and trying to decide if native TB4 controllers resolve the long-standing eGPU concerns we've seen.

Here's the NotebookCheck review of the Asus TUF Dash F15 which may interest some (say compared to the Asus Flow X13). The reduced power dGPU is less of a concern for eGPU users. It also appears to have Optimus switching giving it a 9 hour battery. I agree that no dGPU would be best for us though.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.
