I have an HP Envy 15 ep0098nr with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports, i7-10750h, RTX 2060 Max-Q, 16gb@2933mhz, and a 4k oled panel. I'm thinking of getting an RTX 3080 with an egpu sometime late this year or early next year whenever stock hopefully normalizes while I wait for Intel 13th gen/Ryzen 6000 to drop before I build a desktop but want to get a high end gpu in the meantime if it provides a decent experience with the internal 4k monitor on my laptop in games like cyberpunk and AC Valhalla. For reference at native 4k I currently get ~40 fps at high settings with dlss performance mode in cyberpunk and ~35 fps at high/med settings in AC Valhalla. In short I just want to know if its reasonable to expect around 60 fps in the latest triple a titles like those at 4k high/ultra settings in my internal monitor.

@rootfig, The RTX 3080 eGPU can reach 60FPS with internal display mode at 4K [build link]. Your host laptop is the culprit. The 8th-10th gen H-CPU laptops have very poor Thunderbolt 3 performance. Look at our build guides for similar setup with the 9th/10th gen H-CPU laptops and you'd see unfavorable experience.

@itsage, Thanks for the information! To clarify, my cpu and its tb3 performance wouldn't be able to reach that 60 fps target at internal 4k but with an 11th gen cpu it could? As another question I had, I have another m.2 slot in my system, would an m.2 egpu setup provide the experience I'm looking for if tb3 doesnt?

@rootfig, M.2 NVMe slot would give you much better eGPU performance on your current laptop vs TB3 interface. 11th H-CPU laptops minimize the performance loss but still not as good as M.2 eGPU.

@itsage, hi there
quick question, on your MacBook Pro setups with amd cards, did you run any with Big Sur. I am still on Catalina and wondering whether it is ok to update now?
Thanks in advance.

@tsakal, Yes I have Macs with Big Sur that run AMD cards in Boot Camp. They work well with the right setup procedure. The 2020 Ice Lake MacBook Pro needs Win10 1903 V1 version/pci.sys and 3x TB3 root ports disabled in order to run a Radeon eGPU.

@itsage, think you , in my setup I have the windows running well with w10 2004 having done the pci.sys swap. Bootcamp is run on a partition on my internal disk. So I am contemplating updating the macOS only and I am a bit concerned whether I may face any issues.

@tsakal, I would say to wait until 11.4 is released. My 2020 13-in MacBook Pro Ice Lake is still on 10.15.7 (19H15).
