Windows Error: "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Defaul Apps Settings page"
I have had an external Radeon RX 580 running basically perfectly with my MacBook Pro (I believe 2012 model) with a Thunderbolt cable in both Mac and BootCamp Windows. When I booted up today, I came across a strange issue in Windows - my sound, start menu, and ability to change virtually any settings have all vanished.
When I right click on the desktop and click "Display Settings," for example, a message pops up saying "This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings page." I am unable to click the start button, the sound button or WiFi buttons in the system tray, and yet I'm still able to open programs like Firefox and type up this post.
I have scoured the web on this one and keep running into a wall. There are a few YouTube videos out there that claim to address the issue - (like this one: ). They inform viewers to run the "SFC scan" and provide some code to run in Powershell, but something seems fishy about them. The comments seem overly superlative and "bot-like." Maybe I'm imagining things, but has anyone encountered this issue out there?
I have run virus scans with Malwarebytes and Zone Alarm and no infections are being detected.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
