Just bought an Akitio Node (TB3). Primary use will be GPU rendering in Cinema 4D (Redshift, not Octane). My questions are?

  • Is it best to update to High Sierra for the easiest eGPU support/setup?
  • Will a 1080Ti fit in the Akitio Node?
  • Will the Node provide enough Power for a 1080Ti?
  • Any specific 1080Ti card purchase recommendations?

Thanks in advance. Would be so good to be able to GPU render on the trashcan!
Cheers

  • either is fine now
  • Will a 1080Ti fit in the Akitio Node?
  • yes but it will probably stick out the back, you’ll have to cut
  • Will the Node provide enough Power for a 1080Ti?
  • no way, need an external power supply & jumper (lots of tutorials on this)
  • Any specific 1080Ti card purchase recommendations?
  • get an itx version, might fit better.

Thanks in advance. Would be so good to be able to GPU render on the trashcan!

Do you even have a Node?  Because if you did then you'd know that your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th answers are wrong.

The Node will power a 1080Ti just fine with the stock PSU.
The 1080Ti will not "stick out of the back" and you don't have to cut anything.
Any 1080Ti will fit fine.

Ask me how I know.

Intel Skull Canyon NUC (NUC6i7KYK) - 1TB Samsung 960 EVO NMVe SSD, 32GB memory
Apple Mac Pro 2013 - Deca-core 3GHz Xeon, 32GB memory, 1TB Apple SSD, D700 dGPU, eGPU shared with above NUC.
AKiTiO Node - EVGA GTX 1080Ti SC2 Gaming, Corsair SF600 PSU, Cougar Vortex HDB 120 case fan

I missed the Node part, I used an old TB2 akitio box that I diy’ed together.

"Node" was mentioned 3 times.  😉  But ok, mistakes happen.

@yescaptain, might be too late now but if you're still wondering what to buy then don't rule out the Node.

bought the Node and 1080Ti.

followed this implementation https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/imac-egpu-simply-for-3d-accelleration/

not working yet. guessing its got something to do with external monitor support which i dont need. i only want the GPU cards power for 3D rendering.

my 2013 nMP wont boot when the Node is on, but will when Node is off.

any clues?

Did you end up upgrading to High Sierra? If so, it's slightly different to the guide above. But either way, I have to have to have an external display connected to my iMac for eGPU to work. (I'm Redshift-ing and Octane-ing from C4D)...

Given up on all my Macs...but successfully running: Gigabyte Designare Z390, Core i9-9900K, 64GB RAM, 2x Internal GTX 1080TI, 2x GTX 1070 eGPU (Sonnet eGFX)

It's been a while since I used the Node with my nMP, but have you made sure the Node is connected to one of the bottom two TB2 ports?  There's a known issue with connecting the Node/eGPU to any TB2 ports other than the bottom two.
