MacBook Pro and eGPU issue - possibly related to XFX card?

I've been running into stability issues with my MacBook Pro and eGPU setup.

First let me give you the full specs:

MacBook Pro 15" (2018)
2.9GHz Core i9
dGPU: Radeon Pro 560X w/ 4096 MB
macOS Mojave 10.14.3

Enclosure: Sonnet eGFX Breakaway 550 (550W PSU)
GPU:  XFX - AMD Radeon RX 580 GTS Black Edition 8GB GDDR5

The computer detects the eGPU just fine, and things seem to be working just fine during normal day-to-day use. Stability issues begin to arise when I start playing graphic intensive games.

In particular, when playing Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the game would constantly crash on me. I could play for a couple of hours and it would be fine, then suddenly it would crash bringing down the whole system. Other times, within 5 min of playing, the same type of crash would happen. At first, I thought it was an issue specifically with Deus Ex, as I could play Metro 2033 without issue. Recently, I started to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, and while the game doesn't crash, nor does the system crash, after a short time of playing the screen will black out for a second or two, and then come back. Sometimes this happens sporadically, other times it'll happen every few min.

I next began to wonder if it had something to do specifically with Feral Interactive game ports - as both Deus Ex and Tomb Raider were ported via Feral. As such, I open up Obduction (a game by Cyan, using the Unreal Engine) that ran just fine on my old 27" iMac (2013), and experienced the exact same issues I was having with Tomb Raider - the screen randomly blanking out for a couple of sec, but not crashing.

Finally, searching through these forums, I came across a couple of posts regarding issues with macOS and XFX AMD GPUs - but couldn't find a whole bunch of info beyond some people running into issues with XFX.

So, TL;DR, do you think the underlying issues is just some macOS incompatibility with XFX GPUs? What is about XFX that is different than say stock AMD, or Sapphire, etc.

Thanks for the help!

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

I can't speak to your issue regarding the black screens, I haven't run into this (besides maybe during loading segments in Dying Light). But I have had similar crashing problems with Deus Ex: MD. Crash reports seem to indicate a KP linked to Bridge OS, but I'm still trying to figure out what might be going on. It's telling to me that you are having this issue with a 2018 MBP also, since as far as I can tell, the people for whom the game runs smoothly are using older Macbooks without the T2 chip.

In any case, some games seem to work better than others. As for Rise of the Tomb Raider, that game supposedly supports eGPU, so I don't know why you would be running into issues with it besides some aspect of your configuration (I haven't had issues with it so far, but haven't played for extended periods either). Feral support should be pretty helpful though, especially since the game supports eGPU. Perhaps it has something to do with your dedicated graphics? Maybe you have to specify to prefer the external graphics card?

Anyway, curious to hear about any developments related to this.
