Hey can someone help me out? I am getting an eGPU Box and I wanted to get an AMD GPU for maximum compatibility with Mac. Will any AMD GPU work? And does anyone know what the best AMD GPU is? I have always used Nvidia in my windows builds, so I not familiar with their lineup. I was looking at the R9 Fury X. Will that work in MacOS and Windows (Bootcamp)?

Fury X is going to hard to get, and it is not officially supported by the latest MacOS beta. For MacOS, RX580 is the king (at least officially supported king :))

If you can find something Sapphire RX580 Limited Edition (higher power, faster version of RX580) http://sapphirenitro.sapphiretech.com/en/580-LE.html  or similar, that should do.

ATM the RX 580 has the best macOS compatibility as @Sky11 said. 10.12.6 Beta 6 released yesterday has proper drivers for RX 580.

Yeah RX580 but you may find it difficult to get your hands on a particular one, AMD RX5 series GPU's are very effective at crypto-currency mining (ethereum/bitcoin) and those involved with that are buying up all RX580's that are on the market leading to a shortage.

FYI the CDW rep I spoke with on the phone said their distributor expects more in roughly 2 months. If we were to assume Amazon got some kind of special early stock, I doubt it would be significantly earlier than that. IIRC he did say pre-ordering would be a shorter wait, which would suggest supply is trickling in but getting eaten up by those who've pre-ordered.

proper drivers for RX 580

What benefit would this provide in an eGPU setup?

You mean Beta 3 16G16b, right? I've installed it and have gone through the automate-eGPU instructions for AMD cards. I've yet to see the proper driver, the automate script detects Ellesmere [Radeon RX 470/480] and the card shows up as R9 xxx.

macOS only identifies the Sapphire RX 580 GPU in the Dev kit correctly. RX 480 works but will show up as R9 XXX. There are kext changes in 10.12.6 Beta 3 so I'm not sure Goalque's automate-eGPU script still works.

For eGPU use, I'd definitely recommend using 10.13 Beta.

I made the update, last beta, yesterday on my MBP 2011 and it does work well.

MBP 2018, Touch Bar, i7 2.6 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 1T SSD, Radeon 560X... very nice!
eGPU : Akitio Node + RX 580 + GTX 980 Ti + Vega64
