I figured the issue out. I have a Mac Pro Tin Can. I tried trial and error with every thunderbolt port. Apparently only thunder bolt port 5 & 6 initialize an eGPU properly . That is the bottom tb ports.
So only two egpus allowed.
I originally thought the atikito node didn't deliver enough power on initial power up at boot.
I was wrong. It is all in the tb initialization timing.
I had boinc running with my GTX 970 egpu. it was kicking butt! 3 hours running. The zoltac GTX 970 spinning fans at high speed.. 100% eGPU utilization
No lock ups!

.I experience crashes in MacOS too. My setup:
- EVGA SuperNova 650 GS
- Akitio Thunder2
- GTX 970
- Latest drivers (but the same issue persists since way back)
I had a look in the logs several times and they indeed suggested a powering issue linked to a kernel panic (GPU related) but that just can not be the case. If the setup is not enough evidence, let me add that crashes only happen in MacOS and during regular work or startup/shutdown. It never happens in Windows or when gaming (any system).
Furthermore, it seems to always happen in relation to application windows/tabs (open, close or update) so personally, I suspect bad hardware or drivers. And if the drivers are indeed bad (quite likely), the issue clearly doesn't concern Pascal cards only.
Hi guys!
Having the same problem in Windows 10. From time to time, eGPU shuts down, fan on the 1060 goes to maximum, system still works but I need to restart to reboot eGPU.
- MacBook Pro 13" late 2016
- Akitio TB3
- 1060 6gb
- 350W source
- eGPU plugged in top right TB3 port
Did you guys managed to solve this?

a techsupport guy i spoke to, after asking quite a few others who didn't know, said it sounded like a gpu conflict. how many of us have discrete internal graphics alongside our egpus and never used a script to disable or manage the two gpus? i have a discrete amd gpu in my MBP and never used one, just plugged and played. the more i think about it based on the behaviour of freezing, the more i suspect it could be the problem.
(im using boot camp windows 10)

.I had many freezes when I had Nvidia GPU yes, you can find many threads about Nvidia freezing. Solved switching to AMD Radeon!

you mean, solved by stopping the switching to AMD? how did you do it?
