Does your card have 8-pin power connector or 6-pin?

It has a 6-pin power connector.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Really not a good idea flash RX580 video BIOS on a 6-pin RX480. Reference 580 requires a single 8pin power connector for a reason...

Sadly I can neither get the Thunder 2 nor the Mantiz Venus to work in combination with a XFX RX480 XXX edition. Could be VBIOS, could be current setup with DP -> eGPU. This is with a MacBook Pro 2015 R9 M370X. Can't put my finger on it just yet.

I does spin up and accelerate every single time. But the screen first shows artifacts, then turns to solid red. Rebooting when attaching the eGPU results in nothing, neither does hot plugging during boot.

Your problem is very likely the VBIOS. My Sapphire reference RX 480 8GB  + Mid 2015 MBP M370X works via direct TB2 and TB2-to-TB3 adapter on High Sierra (first beta), and DP-DP connection.

Just got the public beta for 10.13... works fine with my TB3 modified III-D with RX 480 so far!

EDIT: Just waiting now for NVIDIA drivers to see how a 1080 will cope with this

I updated to High Sierra but unfortunately my RX460 does not work with the Venus and the MBP 13" TB 2016. When I hotplug it, it does recognize something (R9 xxx) but it does not ask me to log out and I cannot get an external screen to work. When I leave it plugged in and restart, I end up with log in loop with a blue screen crash.

Now it did work with the Sierra and Goalque's script but I forgot to uninstall it before I upgrade. So I did uninstall it afterwards and I am afraid that maybe some drivers got deleted.

Any ideas?

Only RX 480/RX 580 and possibly RX 470 are supported on High Sierra. Vega very likely as well. RX 460, other AMDs or Nvidia don't work.

The same device id 0x67DF (RX 480 / RX 580 / RX 470 / RX 570) should work. By the way, Overclockers.co.uk offers RX 470 mining edition cards from Sapphire, without display outputs:

I've tried my RX 470 + Thunder2 eGPU and it works great in 10.13.

Anyone have any luck playing Blizzard games or Steam games in High Sierra using external GPUs?
