On another topic, has anyone tried the Apple Dev Kit eGPU with Windows?

If you mean in Bootcamp, then yes. I use it every day with pretty much the level of stability you'd expect from a completely unsupported hardware configuration. I get maybe 5 crashes a week on average. Otherwise it works pretty well albeit with worse performance than I had hoped for.

Probably some other users reported this months ago, but I think it is pretty interesting even for non developer users.

Sweet. How did you get it to work? I've been running into the dreaded Error 12. Did you use itsage's guide?  https://egpu.io/forums/builds/late-2016-15-macbook-pro-rp450-gtx107032gbps-tb3-aorus-gaming-box-win10-itsage/

Well two things. First, I have a 2017 13" MBP with TouchBar. Second, I use the apple_set_os.efi method of maintaining the iGPU when in Windows and I have no issues with drivers or error 12 or whatever. I literally did nothing else special and it just works. No idea what else must be done if you have the dedicated gpu as well. So long as I boot with apple_set_os.efi the eGPU just works like it wasn't some weird hack that is strangely half supported by OS's and drivers at the moment.

Oh ok. It looks like the error 12 business is a conflict between the dGPU on the Mac and the eGPU. You don't have a dGPU, so I assume that's why yours just works.

Man, I am so overwhelmed by all the things people have been doing to try to get these things to connect.

Just an update for those wondering if things will be working with Akitio Thunder3:

vga

My NVidia 1050 is detected. So it looks like Thunder3 will work, as long as a driver is available.

Has anybody used the Thunder3 and a RX460 with High Sierra?

Keen to find the answer to this too... happy to switch from 1060 to a 570 if the Thunder3 still works in macOS/High Sierra.

2017 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar
GTX1060 + AKiTiO Thunder3 + Win10
GTX1070 + Sonnet Breakaway Box + Win10
GTX1070 + Razer Core V1 + Win10
Vega 56 + Razer Core V1 + macOS + Win10
Vega 56 + Mantiz Venus + macOS + W10

Unfortunately I sold my RX460 which I could not get accelerated on Sierra with my NTB Macbook Pro. So I cannot try it myself.

Currently running RX460 with Thunder3 over USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter on my 15" MBP with 750m with macOS Sierra. Let's hope this works in High Sierra too. Will report when I update.

You could put a test install of High Sierra on an external disk or stick and test it. Just download the installer and choose your external disk as target.

got an RX580 and RX570 here, RX580 works fine within the eGFX350 but the 570 just shows up as "Display" in System Information, unplugging causes a complete system crash with "black screen" I am on 10.13 (17A358a) any ideas?

My dev kit suddenly stopped working. This may or may not be related to installing the latest seed of HS. Is anyone else having this problem? I realize that if I have a hardware issue, I have no idea who I need to send it to!

For what it's worth, I just installed Seed 9 and the problem went away.

I just did a clean install of High Sierra GM.

Before I was using Sierra with the automate eGPU script for my Thunder3 with RX460, USB-C to TB2 Adapter. Worked good.

With High Sierra there is no native support. Should I try to install the automate script in High Sierra to see if it works?

Interesting- did they disable eGPU in the GM since it isn't a supported feature at launch of HS? It works fine in seed 9. I haven't installed the GM yet.

Improvements yes. With the GM + HL23T's macOS TB3 firmware & RX VEGA 64 , I was able launch Hitman Metal API benchmark and it went through almost to the end. The app crashed immediately in my previous test. I don’t know if it’s due to firmware or GM build. Probably the latter.

Quite a lot of games already support Metal:

Your problem is very likely the VBIOS. My Sapphire reference RX 480 8GB  + Mid 2015 MBP M370X works via direct TB2 and TB2-to-TB3 adapter on High Sierra (first beta), and DP-DP connection.

This might probably be the case for my GPU as well, albeit an MSI Armor RX 480 4GB@FricoRico's suggestion might actually work. I believe this is a single 8-pin card, however the VRAM is different.

I can confirm that flashing my XFX RX480 XXX OC Edition with AMD's reference RX480 bios works perfectly. I have acceleration under MacOS and Windows 10 using the Akitio Thunder 2. Do make sure you use a bios with the same VRAM manufacturer, for me it was Samsung.

@FricoRico

How do you flashed you graphic card ? There is a link or video ?

Tks !
