I have Akitio Pro with Vega 56 connected to 13'' MBP Pro late 2016.

When I click 'Eject eGPU' all apps are restarting and only after that i can disconnect the external display. Is that normal? What's the difference then between older versions of MacOS forcing to logout if I have to close all apps anyway?

Yes it is normal, already opened apps needs to switch to the other GPU. If you close apps (cmd-q for example) they will not open again naturally. macOS pass apps to the integrated GPU and you see the UI again | LG 34" 4K 34UC88 curved ultrawide display
