My system is an iMac late 2013 27" screen
3.5 Ghz Intel Core i7
8GB Ram, Nvidia GeForce GTX 780M 4096MB
Running High Sierra 10.13.5

My objective is work on Octane render. Not interested in gaming. Where do I even begin as I have no experience with modifying my system. Can I still use an eGpu even if I have thunderbolt 1? Heard some conflicting reports I need at least thunderbolt 2? Will there lots of limitations for me? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I don't believe octane is accelerated much by eGPU. I don't think its optimized to recognize the cuda cores from TB devices. I have a similar iMac and think it is possible (but havent tried) to use a TB3 to TB2 cable converter then a TB1 cable to get an eGPU to work. I know people say DaVinci Resolve is accelerated but that other pro apps like Adobe suite are not (yet) optimized for eGPU. I would like to think that maybe with Mojave and updated Nvidia web drivers and octane or other render engines/ pro apps starting to recognize eGPU will make it possible in future.

iMac 2013 10.9, Macbook Air 2013 10.11, MBP 2016 13" 10.12 , HP 4530s 10.11, node lite, DA-2 PSU w/mod, PE4L 2.1b expresscard34, GTX460,1060,1070/Ti RX470,560,580

I believe you're right especially your comment on eGPU and losing performance speed. I don't know about this DaVinci Resolve and I may just have to accept the fact in the long run, my iMac is not gonna cut it.

there have been some updates about octane on this site. can't remember where exactly or if it was through windows bootcamp. I don't have octane, but will be putting eGPU on my 2013 iMac very soon (node lite / PSU mod+ 1070).

Interesting I never even tried windows bootcamp on my mac before. I wonder how the performance is like in general. I feel like I'm at cross road...do I try to resolve with my iMac or do I just start scratch and go to a PC? I'm also not aware of an enclosure that can support multi GPUs?

You mentioned you may try your own eGpu setup soon...I'm very curious to know it turns out.
