Different macOS Catalina/Game Resolution Instability - A helpful suggestion
A suggestion - Do not run display scaling at a different resolution than your games resolution.
It seems that all games don't have the ability to change the macOS Catalina display scaling, and I assume that this conflict is the underlying cause of my intermittent crashes. Running the display scaling at the same resolution has made this problem disappear. So I thought I'd share that experience with all of you.
There are lots of reasons for crashing. If you suffer crashes, this might be one of them.
For those who don't know how to change the display scaling in macOS Catalina, here is a quick description and visual aid:
- Go to "System preferences"
- Then "Displays"
- By default the window is quite empty, as the option "Default for display" is usually ticked
- Tick the "Scaled" option
- To see what resolution different UI scaling options will target, hover your mouse over the icons for a description text to appear under the display pictured to the left in the window
- Set resolution to the one you want to use in your game
I've noticed that too. My monitor is 4K but most game show me 5K resolution, just because I'm running scaled res of 2560x1440.

@ikir, games I play usually default to the scaled resolution I'm using. The real issues crop up when they either default to something else, or I set the resolution manually. It's weird how different the same issue manifests itself for different users on Mac.
A funny thing I've noticed recently is that the issue is most prominent, for me, with games i launch and play through GOG Galaxy. Steam seems to handle it much better. Odd.
