As you can see from my profile I’m using Dual RX470s on my 2018 Mac Mini. This I use purely for creative work...editing...motion graphics...fx...graphic design etc. I’ve just upgraded the RAM to 64gb...maxing it out and its lovely to have some occasional headroom...I do tend to push what every software I’m using to it’s limits. Next...and last...on my upgrade list is the eGPUs...which are now the bottleneck...mostly in DaVinci Resolve. I have the budget to cover both the Radeon 5700XT and the VII and associated eGPU box upgrades too. I looked at comparisons on Barefeats... https://barefeats.com/cmp-5700-xt-vs-other-gpus.html and it seems...although it’s not a direct comparison...Mac Pro vs Mac Mini that I have...that the 5700XT more than holds it’s own. My only issue would be going forward in the short to middle term. So looking for anyone’s wise thoughts as I ponder the way to go... 😉

A dual 5700 xt setup is good for DaVinci Resolve and for Maya or Blender paired with Pro Render.

The Radeon VII’s 16gb of high bandwidth memory will help when working with 4K video. 👨‍💻

Fellow members WE NEED HELP !

I am still confused and have not seen clear evidence of one or the other.

Going forward on MAC with Metal is the GCN or the RDNA architectures better ?

The New Mac Pros GPU are they  GCN or RDNA based and why. Is it better or in order to have another upgrade cycle in a year or so?

Obviously for gaming the 5x00 cards are very good value for money but for pro apps can you get better performance from radeon vii

Please any member who has used both cards chime in it will help all of us.

Is very confusing to have the Radeon VII and the New 5x00 xt cards introduced so close to each other with very different architectures.

Judging by the 5600xt release is clear that AMD has no plan what so ever just reacts ....

I’ve had 3 Navi cards, two of which have been faulty. Tbh I wouldn’t touch Navi again for a good 6 months.

It really depends on the software not the hardware.

Programs like DaVinci Resolve and Blender have been updated for Navi cards. That’s why Navi is very good at compute tasks in these programs.

Navi is a good platform for compute, and good for fast 3D viewport and modeling performance in Maya and AutoCAD in my everyday experience.

Its good at every task - when you’re running updated software. That is the important distinction.

Other software makers don’t seem to have updated their programs for Navi cards and I haven’t seen a clear schedule as to when they will.

Until then, the open bar will continue to ask us to sit back and enjoy our cocktail of confusion. 🍸 🤷‍♂️

I have got a 5700xt from saphire and it works fine so far both in macOS and w10.

@mini-i5

Thanks for the insight.

So radeon vii is not navi then? They are not just checked.

Is the new Mac Pro gpus navi based?

The W5700x 16GB GPU card is the Navi based option.

Then there’s the Vega II 32 GB GPU option for 8K and 4K video.

And the Pro RX 580 option for Music and Audio production.

They are covering every base.

Thank you that's very useful.

The way I see it is that navi is the way to go. It ll just take some time for the drivers to mature.

Do we have any clues of what of the cards you mentioned above corresponds to the 5000xt series cards.

Pro RX 580 option Lets skip this one

W5700x 16GB GPU this sounds like 5700xt with 16gb ram

Vega II 32 GB GPU option  ????

Are the Vega II the 5700xt with even more ram or an unannounced 5900 or 6000?
