Hey guys! My Macbook Pro 16 inch in on it`s way and I am planning on purchasing  an additional monitor. LG Ultrafine 5k comes to mind as I can`t find similar monitor with 5k resolution and 500nits display.

As I sometimes do graphic-heavy work such as 4k video editing and color-grading, I also want to purchase an eGPU with 5700XT. I noticed that the Ultrafine monitor has only thunderbolt connector and no AMD GPU currently support it. My plan is to connect the LG monitor directly to the laptop and connect one of my old Dell monitor to the eGPU.

Will this setup cause any performance loss? Ideally the built-in GPU in Macbook Pro will drive the 5K display and the eGPU will drive the Dell display and do all my rendering. I don`t know if it will work though.

Thank you!

What is the purpose of connecting the monitor to the eGPU if you are not using it? The rendering will be done by whatever GPU is specified in Final Cut Pro regardless of monitor connection. Live effect and playback will be done by the GPU connected to the monitor you are looking at. From my experience with MBP and dual screen I had onboard GPU driving the screen and eGPU driving a grading screen for playback and the performance was not good. It saw the screen as a playback device but not the eGPU to drive it

@alexchen45 if you are yet to buy the 5K Ultrafine the new generation ones (which I guess you would be buying if buying new) can be powered by USB C as well/instead of TB3 unlike the original ones, so I think you should be able to connect it directly to an egpu.

There are limitations which I'm not 100% sure of - I think it may be limited 4K and you will lose Webcam/Speakers/USB unless you use a very specific cable which is meant for VR headsets, sorry to be vague, can't remember specifics, but that should be enough for you to hunt the full info out.

@massimo_franzese, Thank you for replying. I read that eGPU with 5700XT performed best when there is a HDMI connection, not sure why, maybe a driver issue.

@eightarmedpet, I read about it too. I think the cable to which you are referring is a Huawei VR2 Cable, I looked for it but it`s not available anywhere in my country. I don`t want to scarified the resolution despite that I might not able to notice it from a normal distance. Thank you for your input.

If I can give you a suggestion buy another 4K monitor and don't loose your sleep on ultrafine because

1. The panel is FRC like many others

2. The thunderbolt only connection is a PITA

3.You don't need 5K unless you do photography

4. Even on point 4 the LG do not respond well to color spaces change

I sold it and bought a 4K BENQ monitor best thing I could have ever done just regret spending 1 year with Ultrafine

@massimo_franzese, I do photography, guess it’s best for me to go with another 4k monitor. Can I ask which Benq monitor did you go for?

@alexchen45, as I do a mix of videos and photos I choose the Benq PD2720U

it is sRGB Rec709 and adobe RGB 100% and P3 95% and has a macbook mode that is very useful

there are other screens more photo orientated but this for me was a good compromise

@massimo_franzese, Thank you, I am considering PD2720U and SW271, seem pretty alike except for hardware calibration

@alexchen45, the sw271 is more photo oriented and takes LUTs it also has a hood it is slightly less bright

the PD2720U is more consumer but has the macbook mode and Display P3

i would get the sw271 for photos only or the pd2720u if you need more general purpose

they will both work well...
