eGPU + AMD Radeon Vega Frontier
Oops, I attached the wrong screen, I've edited the post above to include the benchmark using the Vega FE LC. Yep using iMac Pro, 10 core CPU. The performance is pretty good with the VEGA FE LC, just shy of the 1080 TI (although given that the 1080 TI doesn't work in 10.13.4 right now, it's well behind!).
One thing I noticed in all of our screens, is that the FE LC is showing as 256MB. Not sure why and if that is somehow limiting its performance.
@Antoine, do you have a source for the TB2 drop? And do you know if this drop will carry on? If so, that'd be really shitty on Apple's side...
Don't want to hijack but just saying I am glad I came across this thread as it gives me a little more info to go on.
I have an Akitio Node and had a 1080Ti and recently swapped to a Vega64 LC with SF600 and all I got was (like mentioned) the fan sounding like it was going to take off out of the case. Nothing else.
Mac picked up the Node but nothing about the card showed up regardless of anything I did.
I had just picked up the card and immediately had to go out of town for two weeks and was wanting to bring the eGPU with me to do some testing on the road but after turning up with nothing I decided to leave it behind and just do some heavy reading while I was gone.
So you guys are saying that you have some luck with the Sonnet box but the Node at the moment is a bust with LC cards?
I am wondering if I just need to try and get a BreakawayBox delivered before I get home and hopefully this gives me some kind of functionality.
Have you guys come across anyone with VegaLC cards in macOS working with a box other than the BB? So far this is the first thread I've seen that is starting to answer some of the questions I've been having.
Thanks for any extra help you can throw my way.
Well I would like to report:
The egpu setup works. Actually surprisingly easy compared to my previous setup.
So in Mojave, I was already logged in on the MacBook, connected the Thunderbolt cable and the GPU was picked up almost immediately.
I heard a small little click from the BB turning on and the menu bar egpu icon showed up very quickly.
About this mac still showed the Iris Graphics 550 as being used but a restart set the Vega64 as the main gpu listed.
I haven't had much testing done at the moment. Much more come Monday (11th). I don't have any extra external monitors at home at the moment since I took both Ultrawides to work. And I'll test performance on a 2013 Mac Pro 6c D500 and a base model 2014 Mac Mini to see how the egpu works on different hardware.
