eGpu is recognized, nothing but black screen though
When there's no display connected to my 1080 Aorus box, I can see the graphics adapter in the system information window. When I plug a display (tried DP, HDMI and DVI), it turns on and receives a signal, but it's all black. Internal Macbook display is all black as well. If I unplug the external display from the eGpu, internal Macbook display starts working again.
I tried logging out and logging in again. It didn't work. Although I think that's needed when the eGpu is not recognized at all, which is not my case.
Try connecting the Aorus box (with the displays attached) after you have booted up, but before logging in. If that doesn't work, can you post the model of your macbook and the driver version you used?

That didn't work either. Everything is black once I log in.
I'm on a 15" Macbook Pro with Touchbar (2017), OS 10.13.3, 3220.127.116.11.25.156 nVidia drivers with nvidia-egpu-v7.
I have a similar issue to you, @archvile. I have an Aorus GTX 1070 box that I had been using with my Mid-2014 13" MacBook Pro over TB2, and around late January it stopped sending video signals to my Dell P2416D monitor. I've remained on macOS 10.12.6 to maintain compatibility, but after a Nvidia driver update I lost the ability to establish a connection between the graphics card and the monitor. The crazy thing is that the OS recognizes the graphics card, and the enclosure's fans and lights turn on, I wish I knew what steps to take.

This happened to my system, what fixed it was completely disabling SIP. When I installed the drivers I had only done "csrutil enable --without kext", after doing "csrutil disable", I could use the monitor connected to the eGPU.
Hope this helps someone!
