eGPU showing no activity at all

Hello everyone,

I finally installed a gigabyte radeon 5700 XT 8G OC on my Mantiz Venus and connected it to my 2020 iMac i7.

macOS detected it and everything seemed to work fine, but....

The activity monitor's GPU history panel shows no eGPU activity at all (I choose the "prefer eGPU" option on every app I want to accelerate, but no results)

I ran a GPU benchmark that I downloaded from the App Store and it only marked 0.8 FPS at x1200 resolution which is strange.

I don't have an external monitor, only my iMac's built-in display.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be happening?

Thanks for your help.

IMac 27 2020 radeon pro 5500 xt 8 Gb VRAM, 64 Gb RAM, i7 3,8 Ghz. Would also like to try my eGPU on my late 2015 imac 27 5k i5 through thunderbolt 2.

Many programs aren’t written to fully use an eGPU. (And in some you still need to select the eGPU within the program’s “Preferences” pull-down menus.)

Certain tools in Affinity Photo, and all of the game Hitman 2 will use your eGPU though. So downloading a free trial is a way to check your setup.

And a free (limited) demo version of Octane X GPU Renderer for Mac OS Metal is available here:

https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/demo/#demo

For benchmarking on the demo version of Octane X, I downloaded Otoy's OctaneBench 4.00 scene files available here:

Also, the Basemark GPU for Metal benchmark should allow you to select and test your eGPU.

Thanks a lot for your help.

The benchmarks I have done so far got very discrete results:

Unigine Heaven x1440 fullscreen ultra quality & tessellation extreme an average of 37,8 FPS

Don't know what to think/expect to be honest....

Run the Basemark GPU for Metal benchmark at 4K. Big Sur and Catalina performance are built on the Metal API.

You can ignore Heaven, as it’s old and OpenGL based. It’s irrelevant. And don’t run anything at 1080p or 1440p. There’s more performance loss over TB3 at those resolutions.

@moein_reza_motallebi,

The RX 5700 XT is a much better card.

According to others, Resolve can use dual eGPU for certain specific effects. But Resolve, just like FCP, is very picky.

The Intel CPU, and sometimes the T2 chip, are used more than the GPU for many tasks.

Thank you for response.

Actually, now i use  Razer Core X Chroma  with AMD Radeon RX  5600XT  6GB GDDR6 PCIE 4. 0 with Blackmagic Radeon Pro 580 graphics processor with 8GB of GDDR5 memory in MacOs BigSur. I have a lot of problems but I will try to fix it.
