eGPU Simple Advantages Question - MacOS
Hello eGPU team!
I was wondering whether anyone could offer any advice on a simple eGPU question.
I have used eGPU's (Both AMD & NVIDIA) on win + mac but never really understood whether less demanding apps such as safari PIP, word, PDF expert, preview etc benefit from using a eGPU. I have always used the eGPU for gaming + FCP and noticed it there but recently I have built a desktop so no longer have that need and have been plugging in my 2018 MacBook Air with a Asus XG Station Pro + Vega 64 on a 4K 60Hz IPS display when I am at home and just wanted some advise whether I am wasting my time plugging it in?
For plain desktop use, there is practically no advantage in the eGPU over using your MBA's iGPU. Some common programs do utilize GPUs (such as GPU assisted webpage rendering by browsers) but the performance advantages offered will be very, very minute, if any, over the iGPU itself.
"Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it."- Robert A. Heinlein, "Time Enough for Love."
There is no advantage but neither a disadvantage (if you already have the eGPU spare). The only obvious differences in general use case arise when one wishes to use multiple high resolution (4K+) monitors where the interface may chug a little (experience with MBP 750M to 2 4K monitors without eGPU - it handled them well 99.9% of the time but ran hot with fan speeds above normal at all times). So yeah, perfectly ok to sell the eGPU IMO if unneeded.
Hi all! Sorry to drag this back up again but would like to know if there is anyway to get the eGPU to assist or take over in VP9 rendering whilst in YouTube chrome 4K as the CPU in the 18' MacBook air just cannot do it and constantly buffers and was really hoping I didn't need to switch to my windows desktop just to view 4K content on YouTube! I have tried switching on Prefer eGPU in chromes settings. Anything else I could try? Cheers!
Someone else correct me if I'm wrong but, I don't think Chrome uses the eGPU on macOS.
Hey , I have a iMac pro with vega 56 and i am trying to do gaming and streaming with a secondary monitor attached , but the problem is that the fps drops and both game and obs are lagging
i was wondering should i purchase a egpu to boost the performance , also i was looking at the 2080ti it looks good but can i use it on my iMac? if yes How? and should i?
