eGPU w/ Radeon 5700XT on macOS repeatedly freezes while in game
I have a Rx-57XT8TBD8 (XFX RX 5700 Xt Thicc III Ultra) GPU inside the Razer Core X. I followed the fan replacement advice in this thread, and the fans run just fine all the time. My main display is running 1440p144hz and is the only monitor connected to the eGPU (and it's over DP).
I only play one game, Minecraft, and after playing the game for any (seemingly) random amount of time, the entire system freezes (does not accept keyboard or mouse input, and the screen stops on whatever frame it was on) for a random period of time. I have to wait for it to come back, or macOS just crashes (it's like the springboard crashes it's not a full restart, it's like it only sends me to the login screen and closes all running programs). Not sure if this information helps, but music will keep playing, and I can still use a connected bluetooth microphone, but if I get the "logout crash", then the bluetooth module becomes frozen and takes ~5-10 minutes to become available again, short of actually restarting the system.
Outside of Minecraft I never encounter this issue, and I don't have any additional resource packs or shaders in the game that might be causing this.
Is this just common on games with a NAVI card because of bad drivers, or is there something I should be doing to fix this?
I’ve never had a crash while gaming on my 5700 XT.
What model? Your enclosure is also different. There are differing explanations on here to explain this, among which include driver problems, overheating (unlikely because the 2nd monitor is connected to the mac mini and that freezes as well), and faulty specific models of the 5700 XT series.
Maybe the problem is your XFX? Does anyone like XFX for Mac eGPU?
@joevt, is there problems with XFX for macOS? Should I return it and try a different model?
is there a recommended model I should be using? I’m tempted to wait for Navi 2 so I know for sure it’s the enclosure causing the problems and not the GPU.
@brian_graham, I don't know. There were reports with older XFX cards but I don't know all the details. I don't know if there's problems with the latest cards.
The problem could be bad macOS Navi drivers but there's nothing you can do about that. So getting a different GPU might be the only solution. I think people like Sapphire and PowerColor but I have no opinion on that (I have a Sapphire RX 580).
