Hi,

I've had a search through the forums and not really been able to find anyones experience with installing the firmware available for the RX 580 GAMING BOX. I was hoping someone/people would be able to let me know theirs.

My main issue is that I leave a Mac Mini attached to a eGPU and let the Mac mini go to sleep. I do not turn it off currently because it has FileVault enabled, so I can't see the login screen on reboot - but that's a different issue. My issue is the fans on the eGPU will eventually go to what seems like max RPM if I leave the machine long enough (over night).

Gigabyte have some firmware that say it addresses some fan issues: F1.1 and F1.3.

I was wondering if anyone has installed any of these, and if they have seen an improvement if the fans while a macOS machine is sleeping. Or even generally, under light load, like just desktop with no graphically intensive games/applications. I find the eGPU generally louder then I would expect in these states.

Thanks.

@freebie, The 1.3 FW does quiet the side fans down a lot during idle (they don't run at all). The sleep behavior you described can be a number of factors, most likely to do with macOS not able to communicate its power states to the Gaming Box USB-C controller. I have been using the Gaming Box FW 1.3 with the 2018 Mac mini and never experienced that full fan speed during sleep.

@itsage, oh, thanks for letting me know your experience. I didn't want to go through the hassle of booting a windows partition to flash the firmware if it would have no effect. With the added risk of it making it worse or bricking the device.

By 'idle' are you counting just when your Mac mini is asleep / display off, or do you mean low intensity stuff like using the desktop and not gaming/video editing?

I've seen other people mention have the fans kick into a high RPM after the machine is asleep some times. I wonder if it has something to do with the macOS "Enable Power Nap" option in the "Energy Saver" preferences.

I started to look at forum posts where others have replaced their fans with quieter after-market ones. I may try this in combination with the F1.3 firmware.

My main goal is to try and get the eGPU silent for both low-intensity desktop use and while the machine is asleep.

Thanks again for the response.
