Bummer that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 compatibility has been broken. Hope it will be added again eventually!

Was really looking forward to using one eGPU enclosure with both my 2016 MBP (Thunderbolt 3) and 2012 iMac (Thunderbolt) without any tinkering. Hope it works out when 10.13.4 is ready.

The 10.13.4 Beta (17E150g) crashes my mid 2014 rMBPr (TB2) (sonnet breakaway 650PS) and Sapphire RXVega 64. If course NVIDIA doesn't typically provide web drivers for beta version, but when I plug in my Venus and a GTX680  it doesn't see the card but it sees the device and it doesn't crash the machine like the VEGA does.

I just installed the 10.13.4 beta a few days ago and have had a number of crashes and system reboots due to problem usually in clamshell mode after it has sat a while and gone to sleep. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Was very stable under the previous build. When you look at the details it looks like something happening trying to reload kext.

@sprober yeah that is exactly what is happening to me, clamshell mode if i leave my computer alone for a long time i discover that it crahed and rebooted. I was thinking that it had to be something related to sleep but i found the same issue after disabling sleep while connected to a power source and disable hard disk sleep. So it’s something else.

For those who are running Final Cut Pro X under 10.13.4 and using the popular Neat Video plugin with Vega Frontier Edition there is an issue that, even if it's recognised by NV, it will prevent NV to use it. I've reported the bug to the support team and today they'll send me a test version to solve the issue.
Just to tell that if you have this issue in this specific configuration, NV team are working to solve it.

Do you have any other Thunderbolt devices? The Feb 6 edit to this post says this build has broken support for Thunderbolt 2 eGPU. My EGPu is Thunderbolt 3 but I have a Thunderbolt 2 audio interface connected using Apple's Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Wondering if that's the problem, going to have to try running with it unplugged for a while and see.

@theitsage and others. As a follow up I upgraded to 10.13.4 Beta (17E150g) a few days ago. Previous build was ultra stable and I was really happy with it. Now I get occasional system crashes while in clamshell mode and when hot unplugging it always crashes whether I use the eGPU eject or not. It has been mentioned that this build broke Thunderbolt 2 Macs but I'm wondering if it is causing problems with any Thunderbolt 2 devices, I have a Motu 828x audio interface connected with the Apple Thunderbolt 2 adapter. I will unplug the Motu and see if the crashes continue but it is one of my primary tools and just wondered if others are experiencing this with other Thunderbolt 2 devices. I have a late model 15" MacBook quad TB# port, 1 port connected to Mantiz eGPU with RX580, 1 port connected to TB3 storage and 1 port connected to the Moto using TB2 adapter. Crash report is always the same and is as follows:

My XFX RX480 Black edition now is official on my system, MacBookPro Late 2016 + Akitio Node!!!

Now it’s plug&play…almost..

EUREKA!!

I've got this GPU too, but I've never used it because I've been under the impression the Black Editions didn't work due to their BIOS/firmware. Is your model the RX-480P8LFLR?

Thanks a ton!

@jim_survak 10.13.4 brings a lot of improvements to external GPU for Thunderbolt 3 Macs. Unfortunately in Beta 2 older Macs are currently not able to use this feature due to a bug/block.

Ah, I was misunderstanding that this was specific to Beta 2 and that Jef was using Beta 2. Too bad, I guess I'll be getting a different GPU. I don't want a really powerful one, maybe something like an RX-460/560.

TB2 or older not supported / dropped on 10.13.4 Beta 3 from what I can tell. Someone with a verified working 10.13.3 TB2 build should confirm the same with the new beta, since my Mac is different. Kernel panics, etc. fixed. eGPUs detected but cannot be used for compute or render. For a moment, the eGPU menu bar icon shows up, but then disappears. No changes to external monitors observed. This seems like the end of unsupported eGPU support for older devices. Maybe workarounds could get it back up and running.

Are there any improvements you can notice with TB3 eGPU support on the new beta?

mac_editor: not surprising...

Unrelated: does anyone see the quotation feature disappear when logged in via Safari? Didn't use to happen but last week or so I only see "reply" not "quote" on people's posts, when logged in. When not logged in, I see both. Strange.

@chippy-mcchipset - yes, it seems so. As you said, it’s not new for Apple to drop support like this haha. At least this does not change the fact that the future of eGPU looks bright. Hot-plug eGPU support is great on TB3.

And yes, that quote feature is missing. I want it back too!

I suppose tomorrow we will have a new public beta. I still hope Apple is working on TB2 support

This is further evidence TB1 & TB2 Macs won't have native eGPU support in 10.13.4. Upon plugging in, the eGPU icon appears briefly then disappears. macOS now validates a Mac for TB3 prior to loading graphics drivers. More interesting is when hot-unplug the eGPU, macOS complains and asks that you use the Eject button first. I hope someone can figure out a way to disable this Thunderbolt version validation process.

@itsage interesting, so any news about eject button not crashing the system? or clamshell mode working without crashes?

@juan_c_yunis I only had time to test with the 2013 Mac Pro so far. The "GPU Not Eject Properly" notification was contrary in that macOS 10.13.4b3 blocks eGPU with TB1 & TB2 Macs and yet it tells us to treat eGPU nicely.

So....I think it's looking like my investment in eGPU is going to be a waste unless I upgrade my iMac to a Thunderbolt 3 model... I knew this would be a rocky road... might be time to just realise that rendering is for my PCs only... It felt good to be riding the early wave but hopes are a bit dashed now... 🙂

@juan_c_yunis Eject button still crashes the system. I've reported its behavior to Aplpe again for this new beta. A pretty reliable way I've found to hot-unplug the eGPU is to open the clamshell (so there's a monitor for the system to fall back on) and then unplug the eGPU. Once the laptop's display flashes, then it's safe to close the machine to put it to sleep.

Geekbench OpenCL / Metal Compute scores any better on this latest Beta?
Hoping for OpenGL improvements too.
Please state GFX card tested.

Now that TB2 is completely disabled I have no test Mac so can't check for myself. I did notice another driver version bump for all AMD related drivers in macOS on 10.13.4 b3. I'm putting the MBP15 2015 TB2 Mac up for sale. It's still properly decent for everything else.

@jefniro Same here, RX480, if there's no other workaround, disable LCD font smoothing.
Enabling HiDPI mode makes non smoothed font rendering more bearable:
1. Download and run this script https://github.com/syscl/Enable-HiDPI-OSX
2. Write your native resolution e.g. 2560x1440 then press Enter
3. Write 0 then press Enter
4. Restart computer
5. In display settings select scaled and then select your native resolution that has no (low resolution) in their name  https://imgur.com/a/3RQpr

@nanobit & @marcjoe, I've tested Boot Camp in my late 2016 15" MacBook Pro running 10.13.4b and there's no changes in behavior. eGPU still works but requires extensive setup as before.

Yep. As predicted this is most likely not an accident. For better or worse they have business reasons to do it this way. And arguably they have technical / stability reasons as well. Not that I'm unsympathetic. Sucks bigtime for trashcan users. They are getting screwed more than the rest combined.

I have managed to get 4k 60hz working over hdmi 2.0 as of the latest 10.13.4 beta 3.
Tested on a 2016 MBP 450 connected to an Asus ROG XG station 2 with a RX580.

So there are 3 main issues I've noticed since moving over to a Vega 64 under 10.13.4 latest beta:

1) eGPU will not properly go to sleep. When you try to put the computer to sleep, it spins down for a few seconds, then immediately spins back up, and turns all my keyboard/mouse LED lights up, and after maybe 15 seconds, this cycle repeats into infinity.

2) When the screensaver comes on, the eGPU fans kick up into high gear. Vega is a noisy SOB, and anytime the fans come on, it's audible unless the TV is up.

3) You can't boot up the Mac with the eGPU attached. It will just freeze forever on the Apple logo with the loading bar under it. As soon as you disconnect eGPU, it immediately loads to login screen, and I can login then attach it.
