[FREEZES] - Constant OS freeze/crashes after some time
Apologises in advance as Im kinda newbie in this area.
I couldn't be more excited after getting a Sapphire enclosure with a Raedon RX 5600 XT in it. Hook it up to my 2016 15'' MBP and it recognised it immediately. At the moment of installing I had macOS 10.15.3. Then after some time (hours) suddenly while browsing on safari (facebook or youtube) the computer would just simply freeze completely and I was forced to turned off the computer, enclosure and back again on. This happened a couple of times.. and realised this was always while browsing on safari, So I decided to install firefox and browse using that browser, so far didn't freeze, (but firefox is a memory eater, and its sluggish IMO, compared to safari)
Playing games is "amazing", and for what I bought it for, to get better Photo Editing performance, I got good/better performance with the software I use, so Im happy.
But the freezes continued while even using my photo editing software, or playing a game. After reading some forums, seems there is something related when the computer goes to sleep and back awake, which is something my computer does as Im constantly on and off form it, just now Im not sure what can you guys recommend me to do, I updated to macOS 10.15.4 a few days ago, freezes continues.. thou Im using safari since yesterday to see if the crashes happens again as I ready somewhere that in .15.4 something should have been fixed. I also noticed some scripts around, but from the description I shouldn't need them, so I haven't even ran them.
My setup is :
MBP 2016 15''
Sapphire Box + Raedon RX5600 XT
External 4k dell monitor connected to the eGPU using DP.
Enclosure connected the computer via TB3
MBP with the display closed. (sometimes I open it when I need to video call)
Best Regards and thanks in advance
There is nothing you can do to fix this. Those freezes are well known and affect all Navi based GPUs. Issue has been reported to Apple by me and others since day one support but they don't seem to care about it. What's triggering the freeze is starting a process utilizing AppleGVA after sleep. All people can do is to submit bug reports to Apple. The more pressure you put on them the more likely it is the bug will get fixed.
Aside from that, Navi GPU drivers in macOS have tons of other bugs like glitching in Metal based games (for example in Shadow of the Tomb Raider or Dirt4). The cause of those graphical glitches also seem to affect compute tasks based on Metal since on my Hackintosh I observe instability of FCPX when using my RX 5700 XT. OpenGL/CL based games / workloads work just fine so there definitely is something wrong with the Metal driver for Navi cards.
Funny thing is: With 10.15.4 they somehow managed to port these glitching / stability issues over to Vega20 as well which means the Radeon VII and Radeon Pro Vega II inside the new Mac Pro have exactly the same issues now. Apple has some serious issues with their software quality these days and it drives me mad they keep ignoring bug reports and don't improve anything. Instead, they introduce more issues with each and every update.
Go to Energy Saver under System Preferences (Pull down from the Apple Menu).
Under Graphics options, select Higher Performance. Deselect "Automatic graphics switching".
Also, you can try re-seating your card, and re-connecting the 8-pin power connector to your card. Some are difficult to set in place.
If you aren't using a standard 18" thunderbolt cable, try one instead.
And you can always set your MB to not sleep.
If you still have problems, then return your card for a new one.
@mini-i5, Thanks I have done almost all of the above except from reseting the card.. will have to try that one.
I have set the computer to never sleep, and so far in 3 days I have got 1 freeze. Which is way better than multiple per day since I installed the card.
@christopher_straser, I have reported as well a bug, uploaded the system info files they requested as well as the crash/freeze report .. we will see.
Something since update to 10.15.4, is that safari's browsing crash hasn't appear.
Thank you for the replies.. I will following up this and see when "mighty apple devs" will fix this bugs.
The AppleGVA triggered freezes / crashes still do happen in 10.15.4. The only thing that changed is that it cannot be reproduced anymore. Those freezes / crashes now happen randomly. But my observation is that the issue remains the same.
