Hey guys,

Thought I would leave my findings here for posterity. Will sure help people out.

I have both the Aorus 1080 box and the RX 580 box and I ran them with my trusted 2015 15" macbook pro (TB2).

Here is the difference in performance. I my humble opinion it is matching the specs, nothing out of the ordinary:

Let me know if you have any thoughts on them or suggestions for further testing/benchmarking. I'll be happy to do it until I sell one of the boxes.

Cheers!

Soon I will add my system & eGPU details or a build link to this my signature to give context to my posts

@dream3 Hello! I have a MBP late 2013 15" TB2 and a Aorus 1080 box as well. But i could get the box to power up with TB3 > TB2 adapter and TB2 cable to my mac. Can i have some guidance on how you managed to hooked them up?

I would have thought the 1080 getting better min/max FPs as well. So in OS X they are within the same ballpark. Maybe a TB3 mac would show more difference?
Have you tried video game benchmark?

Hi there, thanks for sharing.

I have managed to connect my mbp 13 2015 to the rx580 gaming box and had it working with Mojave 10.14 as well. However, after 10 days it will just not wake up. I have used the box with a dell xps 13 and it works fine. Have you experienced the same, do you have it connected.

I use the apple tb3.tb2 adapter, i use a tb2 cable matters or apple cable (both worked before) and i have the box connected to mains. Always disconnected the box before unplugging from mbp and mains, leaving the cables connected to the box. The day before it started behaving i took it home and used with a different monitor and the night before i unplugged all cables and put it in the bag. Since then i could not make it work with the mbp again although it works with the dell.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

are you using purge nvda?

I have experienced some hiccups while using it without a external monitor sometimes and the Macbook just restarting by itself when in idle

@vinhdiesel

no i am using purge-wrangler only with amd patch enabled.
The gaming box i got is the rx580. I did not bother to fight the war between apple and nvidia. No time for that.

In my setup with mojave 10.14 i have a very stable system. It works and performs very well with everything incl fcp adobe apps. The only issue is waking (after disconnecting all cables and leaving idle for a few hours) the gaming box connected with display port. However it has been easily fixed ( 4-5 days of experience ) by using an HDMI cable when starting up. I will get a headless adapter and try is so i don't have to carry both cables when on the move.

I not sure I can follow. So you connect the hdmi cable to your egpu and the egpu via tb2 correct?

@vinhdiesel

yes mbp > tb2 apple cable > tb3 to tb2 adapter apple > egpu > either HDMI or DP cable > Monitor.

I prefer the DP connection as i get better resolution for text and work related apps. However as i mentioned when connected to monitor with DP the gaming box is not waking up after being totally disconnected for some time. When i swap the DP with HDMI the box wakes up and then i connect the DP and swap connections on the monitor.

I hope it is clearer now.

Hi im just asking because my external monitor wouldnt turn on or display anything without using purge-nvda. I would prefer just to use a single script like you because purge nvda doesn't work in clamshell mode or turn of the internal screen

@vinhdiesel

That's exactly what i was looking for.

I wanted the minimum amount of patches. With the standard purge-wrangler v 5.0.1  from @mac_editor everything is smooth. My only issue was waking up my gaming box but i figured out that this should be related to the box or the amd card in combination to the tb2 connection. However it is easily solved.

I hope this helps

In the v4 i enabled the normal amd not the legacy and the thunderbolt not the ti82 as my box is a tb3 box. It was pretty automatic the installation. When i check the status on my current v 5.0.1 it indicates only thunderbolt 2 as Enabled.

I think so

You need to check on apple website for the supported cards. As far as i now the rx580 is supported. Only if it is not supported you need the legacy amd patch installed

Thunderbolt is correct

Nvidia is correct

You also need to check your box if it has the tb ti82 controller or not. Normally the newest tb3 boxes which is think yours is are supported. Only if your box is not supported you need to install the ti82 patch.

In my case with a gaming box rx580 and mbp13 2015 with tb2 connection, i need only the thunderbolt patch enabled.

Also note that is best to use the apple tb3>tb2 adapter. Sometimes there have been cases where other do not work properly. I would also recommend also the apple tb2 cable.

I use this combo and it works fine.

@vinhdiesel

no all GPUs should work

the set-up is very straight forward as long as you have the right equipment. This function is enabled by the operating system so the only modification we need to do is unlock the tb2 connection which apple does not want to do. That is the bueaty of the @mac_editor patch. Quick and Simple that works.

in my case the internal gpu (i don't have a discreet one) works at the same time when i use fcp for example.

check the guide on the first page. read it all and then you will find a paragraph for amd cards. If i i am correct you choose amd and then you do NOT choose amd legacy. if you read it carefully you can not go wrong.

The 2016 and beyond mbp work natively till now that is ...

For your setup you should consult mac_editor there must be a way to make it work.

@vinhdiesel You need purge-nvda for the external display to work on AMD eGPU. It's necessary for Macs with NVIDIA GPUs inside. Please read the main posts of the script which details its limitations in depth (like sleep, clamshell not working).
