Hello everyone,
I recently got myself and iMac 2019 and a Razer Core X eGpu with it to circumvent that 2 extra monitor limit the iMac sadly has.
As card I chose a Sapphire RX580 (Nitro+ version).
The internal card of the iMac is a Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB
FileVault is on.

Now I got a pretty nasty problem with that setup though:

First up booting the iMac with just the eGPU (no monitors) plugged in seems to work just fine. Same with turning the eGPU on while the iMac is running.
As soon as I plug in a screen into the eGPU though the problems start.
The first time I did it, the window manager straight up froze, just the mouse was moving -> Hard Poweroff on the iMac

Second time I plugged in two monitors one after another, they both gave me an image for a minute or so and then just a black screen (connection was still there though, just no image) after a few more minutes, full system freeze again -> Hard Poweroff on the iMac

Third time I booted it up with two monitors plugged in, I got what I can only describe as a blue screen equivalent where it told me stuff was wrong and the system would reboot now (that would loop that way if I let it)

Fourth time I booted it with only one monitor, it got me to the password screen but then it got frozen half way to the login/decryption stage. -> Hard Poweroff on the iMac

Now I'm kind of running out of ideas what might be the cause of this. Did anyone experience similar issues/ knows if there are some settings I can tweak to make it work?

I'm a bit at a loss here since as far as I understand it, it theoretically should work.

Best regards,

Try booting with eGPU and monitors attached while FailVault OFF.

Seems like it was the GPU.
I got a different one (also an RX580) from someone to test it out and that one worked first try.
Now I'm not sure if the original one was just faulty or if the slightly higher clocking of the Nitro+ version is to blame
