[HELP] MacBook Pro crashes when eGPU plugged in, stuck in restart loop until I disconnect the eGPU

The firmware I am using is 2017 MacBook Pro with Catalina version 10.15.1, a sonnet 550w breakaway box and a red dragon 5700xt

The system shows the gpu sign on the task bar on the top, with a "no gpu connected" sign when I hover my mouse over it, and then crashes after a short delay. I cannot reboot my computer without unplugging the eGPU as I would be stuck in a restart loop where it loads the bar 2/3rds and restarts again.

Side note: on a Mac OS without 5700xt support, I would just have a display in the eGPU settings but the system would not recognize the "display" as a 5700xt , leading me to believe that the eGPU is able to connect to the MacBook.

Devices: Mid-2017 15" Macbook pro with rp560, Sonnet Breakaway Box 550W, Powercolor red dragon Rx 5700 xt

Mine wouldn’t even display the eGPU, I didn’t try restarting it with the eGPU plugged in but when I tested it, it wouldn’t even show me the eGPU settings in Catalina.

Symptoms are exactly that of faulty GPU assuming appropriate assembly. Test eGPU with another Mac, or GPU in a PC, or just RMA the card.

Would the problem lie with the GPU or the eGPU enclosure? I plan to to take the gpu to microcenter and test it on their rig when i have the chance (I don't have a pc)

@beardedbro

Imma just go to microcenter and replace it i guess. Thank god they have great return policies.

I have the same issue. What i do is to keep the egpu off until im fully logged in, then i turn it on. it's awful.  I have a Macbook pro 2018 with Gigabyte egpu with Radeon RX 580

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@edgar_paz, have same issue with mbp 16” (1tb ssd) and razer core x (rx580 8gb). It’s awful... every time i have to disconnect egpu, restart, connect egpu...

But I didn’t have problem with my old mbp 13” (2016) with my egpu. It depends on mbp model...

hi ,i have the loop restart issue too.  in osx catalina, the system contiune to restart . but in windows 10 ver 1903 ,the gpu works fine .

could you tell me the gpu type you used. I think maybe there is some compatibility problem . In my case, my hardware : mantiz enclosure with Xfx rx5700 . the system (both 10.15.2 and 10.15.3) crashed.   before I upgraded my gpu. I use sapphire rx480. and both osx 10.14.6 and win ver1903 system the gpu worked fine. Have you solved the issue ? thanks.

Sorry to revive such an old thread. I have the exact same issue with a 5700 XT Red dragon in a Razer Core X Chroma enclosure. How did this play out for you? Did you find a solution?

Thanks in advance.
