Using an eGPU for render tasks and also CPU-heavy tasks, how long can I expect a macbook pro to last? The eGPU-usage should increase lifetime right? but what does heavy CPU-usage does to the lifetime of the machine, anyone have experience with that? Can they be used more like workstation class machines with an eGPU attached or should you really have a desktop for that?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

I'm not sure lifetime is a thing. A computer should last a decade before dying. In that time maybe you should have replaced it a couple times just because it's not the latest. The battery will wear out before the CPU/GPU.

Mac mini (2018), Mac Pro (Early 2008), MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, Sapphire Pulse Radeon RX 580 8GB GDDR5, Sonnet Echo Express III-D, Trebleet Thunderbolt 3 to NVMe M.2 case

So no heat death after 1-2 years of heavy use? I have no doubt the eGPU can take it, but will I roast the laptop?

It won't be a problem if you don't mess with processor overclocking, voltage, etc. If you do, there's no problem as long as you keep an eye on the temps.

2017 15" MacBook Pro (RP555) [7th,4C,H] + GTX 1080 Ti @ 32Gbps-TB3 (Mantiz Venus) + macOS 10.12.6 & Win10 [build link]
