MacBook Pro 16" eGPU Hardlock and Bootloop issues

I was having an issue with hardlocking and bootlooping in MacOS using multiple different gpus. I'm using a Razer Core V2 with a MacBook Pro 16" i9 5500m, and I've had a lot of issues with the setup.

RX 5700 XT: Went through 2 of these. PowerColor Red Dragon. First one bootlooped after a single restart, second one started bootlooping after about a week. Before it started bootlooping, it was working perfectly. After the bootlooping started, I found out that apparently, MacOS detected the card, but didn't have a driver for it. This also happened on hot plug in MacOS; Plug in the eGPU, and the computer hardlocks and restarts. Happens in 10.15.3 beta 1 too. Returned both of the cards.

RTX 2070 Super: From Zotac, their mini card. I knew it wasn't going to work in MacOS, but it hardlocks my computer in MacOS too. Returned as well.

RX 580: From Gigabyte, this card works perfectly. No idea why.

I'm completely lost at this point. I really want to use an RX 5700 XT in MacOS and Windows, but because I rely on this tool: https://egpu.io/forums/bootcamp/macbook-pro-16-windows-egpu-error-12-fix/ To use AMD GPUs in windows, (Doesn't work without it,) I can't use the RX 5700 XT in Windows either, since it was bootlooping in MacOS. I also replaced the pci.sys file, which is how I got the second RX 5700 XT working in windows for the week I had it.

Any suggestions? Should I get another 5700 XT and try something else? Get a Radeon VII? What should I do?

Yep - just happened to me: https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2018-15-macbook-pro-rp560x-8th6ch-rx-5700-xt-32gbps-tb3-mantiz-venus-macos-10-15-1-win10-mac_editor/#post-72732

On Red Dragon as well.

Previously happened to me on RX 580 as well.

For the NVIDIA card, you will likely have to plug it in after OS boot due to firmware incompatibility which I think @itsage came across as well.

Huh, that's really strange. I was worried it was an issue with my MacBook Pro or Razer Core V2. Good to hear it's probably neither of them. So it's possibly an issue with the Red Dragon? Either that or MacOS. Other RX 5700 XTs work fine for other people, so I don't know why the Red Dragon in particular would be problematic.

I have been wondering the same. It seems macOS + Red Dragon could be the issue. All I can say is I'm pissed this happened twice. Will file a bug report with Apple to investigate this issue as @eightarmedpet also had this happen to him.

The failure rate is unusually high for the Red Dragon with Mac systems. I have been using the Red Devil version without issues. Would it possible so you to flash the vBIOS and see if that helps?

Not sure if that’ll help. Since the GPU has two BIOSes and both don’t work, it seems like a hardware problem (caused by software/macOS? - I thought those days were over). Windows will throw Code 43 when I tried.

@mac_editor That is too bad. Hopefully you can exchange it for store credit or a different RX 5700 XT model.

I’ve reached out to PowerColor support regarding the issue (have linked my build + this thread). While I could simply go through the RMA process, I thought it would be wiser to ask for them to investigate (no point having a new one for it to fail again) and I simultaneously requested for the possibility of swapping models.

Edit: Also filed a bug report with Apple.
