MacMini Late 2012 - RX570 eGFX Breakaway Puck - LG Monitor - connected via ext. Harddrive Case (Drobo) - Purge-wrangler - eGPU not recognized
Please be kind, I am not a native english speaker
Cinema Display (I loved it so much) does not work any more with Mac Mini Late 2012. So I bought an LG with DisplayPort and HDMI Ports and Cables. I want back my 2560 x 1140 Resolution and my goal ist to have Fonts displayed better
So I read around and found the Solution via external HardDrive-Case (Drobo) and with Purge-Wrangler.
MacMini Late 2012, 2,6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
Thunderbolt Cable 50cm and Adapter 3 to 2 both from Apple
Thunderbolt 3 Cable from Sonnet
Sonnet RX570 eGFX Breakaway Puck (Number 11 in list of Enclosures)
Displayport Cable from LG Monitor
LG Monitor 27UK600-W
To see anything I need to connect the same Monitor with HDMI Cable to HDMI Port of Mac Mini (This works but with this bad fonts). I use SwitchResX to get the scaled Resolution of 2560 x 1140.
Puck ist recognized by System (I place the thunderbolt System Information underneath). If I disconnect the puck, I get the message (in german freely translated) Don't do this, disconnect by Menu only. If I reconnect, it shortly displays the little Symbol for eGPU and if I click on it, it displays "Keine entfernbare GPU" (no disconnecteable GPU) - and the Menu Icon disappears.
As I am not so familiar with Commands, it was a bit difficult to get Purge-wrangler from @mac-Editor to work (predefined Command created a 0 Byte File with no extension and Command "Purge-Wrangler" was answered by "Command not found" ). So I downloaded everything and found it working with ./purge-wrangler.sh. It asked for a password, ran through, but this did not result in any recognizable system reaction.
I tried EFI-eGPU boot manager but got stuck as it did not recognize any GPU and it results in an endless loop of rebooting the system.
I want to user Purge-Wrangler because this booting from stick ist not my thing.
System Integrity is disabled and in this whole process I reformatted my System-Disk with APFS and I now have a recovery partition - nice add-on, but took me some time!
Any suggestions would be awesome as I am so close to a working setup where elderly people from above the 50s hopefully can read the words on the screen better than now.

Can you tell us the macOS version on your 2012 Mac mini? Also does your current physical connection of components look like this? If so I’d recommend connecting the eGPU directly to the Mac mini rather than daisy-chaining it through Drobo DAS. Thunderbolt 1 has a limited amount of bandwidth and having the eGPU behind the external drive may cause issue.
The macOS version is Mojave 10.14.5 . The Idea for this setting came from @davidmini (except that my Drobo has TB2)
I tried without Drobo
- booting lasts longer
- no other changes

Not sure I understood your problem, but did you enable TB1/2 AMD eGPUs in PurgeWrangler?
Oh I would love to, if I could!
I am using newest Version 6.0.0 and there is another user interface (attached underneath)
(have to figure out how to add pictures here...)
pressing 1 results in "Back to menu? [Y/N]: " nothing else
pressing 2 results in List posted above
I have looked through the script but it ist above my horizon...
I am wondering if there is any System-problem with executing scrips and I will dive in this part this afternoon, when it's too hot outside 🙂

@DavidMini I got PurgeWrangler 5.1.3 from Github as you used 5.1.2 and IT DID THE JOB!!
I had to answer the expected questions and reactions were very satisfying
I am so happy!
AND in Addition: I connected again Daisy-chaining through Drobo: And I got fast booting AND recognizing eGPU
@mac_editor good advice 🙂
But as I wrote in the "Current behavior"-Section from my first post, the install string on https://github.com/mayankk2308/purge-wrangler#installation did not work for me.
I had to push "clone or download" in the top section of that page. I had no idea that this would put me in trouble getting the wrong version.
@christina24680 the doc revision was set to 6.0.0+. For the time being I have reverted the docs. It should now function as expected👍. Always use the Releases section and not the download button on the main page if you want to download manually.
@mac_editor: thank you so much, you are great! Everything ist working. I tried the install string - works now too! Wonderful!
@davidmini: thank you so much 🙂
@Oliverb: das freut mich zu lesen 🙂
