Please check the Startup Disk in Preferences... must be Windows.

What do you mean? We cannot use Option at startup?

I mean: "Please check the Startup Disk in Preferences... must be Windows Bootcamp Partition/Disk."

Normally when you start Mac OS you can press Option to chose the partition, I thought you meant that method was not to be used to get a proper boot of the eGPU.

Right, you need to keep pressed the Option button at start... BUT, it need that in MacOS, under Preferences, Startup Disk you choose Windows partition/disk as default startup disk..

Not sure what you are suggesting here but I believe the issue isn't that the OP cannot boot into bootcamp, its that they cannot boot into bootcamp with eGPU. Which can happen due to firmware updates with macOS Catalina. Changing startup disks is not going to resolve the issue and is unrelated to the problem - it really depends on OP's system config IMO. More information is needed.

Im MY case when my OS updates it changes the startup disk to MacOS, I need to change it in order to boot with Bootcamp (it needs to press the Option button too). Without a context, I suggested what happens to me.

You are correct. Issue is changes due to firmware updates in Catalina. I have MacMini 2018 with Sonnet eGFX with Vega64 in it. Monitor connected to DP of eGPU. All worked fine before update to Catalina. Now I can only boot to WIN with eGPU switched off and monitor connected to HDMI of MacMini. When eGPU is connected after botting to WIN10 this end ups with error12 on external card, as always.

Maybe there is the way to have HighSierra external boot HDD and have this somehow as priority boot over Catalina? But don't know how to do that.

Mac mini 2018 cannot boot High Sierra, plus this won't help as once firmware is updated, it generally cannot be rolled back. I think with 10.15.2 they removed Mac mini bootscreen support, which might be the issue.

Hi there,

I am running bootcamp on an external ssd. I think I have W10 1803. My question is now that I upgraded my system to radeon 5700 and razer core x , do I need to uninstall any existing drivers software before connecting the new setup?

I was planning to boot in w10, and after all the windows updates if any, to connect the razer core x in order for windows to finalize the setup and ask me to re boot

Thanks in advance.

Best

Depends on what drivers you were running previously. If latest/supports Navi, then you likely won’t need to.

Ok I ll check and revert.

I was running the gaming box with the rx580 as updated by windows and amd automatically. Never had to do any manual set up.

Do you recommend to connect the gaming box first and run all the updates and then connect the razer x with the 5700xt?

Just try it. Usually if I’m unsure of my configuration, I prefer using DDU and starting fresh.

I could not make it work with w10 1803.

So I decided to make a new one bootcamp drive w10 1909.

Can you please offer some advise how to handle the next steps.

Should I proceed with the recommended windows updates or follow another path?

I have not tried to connect the razor x with the 5700xt yet.

These are the recommended updates I see on windows :

2020-01 windows update is ready (KB4528760)

Apple Media 6.1.7100.0

Apple System 6.1.7500.5

Window .net Framework 3.5 4.8

Thanks in advance

I did the clean install of w 1903 v1 as mentioned in the OP, and manually installed version .295, but when I connect my razor with 5700 xt the system reads it as Microsoft basic display adapter.

update

After trying multiple time the amd setup from bootcamp assistant I managed to install the amd drivers v 20.1.1 and now the 5700xt is recognized but still error 12.

In addition I did the usual resets smc and pram as well as razor reset.

@eugene_chmil , i found a way around to be able to boot in to win 10 1903 in catalina 10.15.2 without the black screen of death. first, you need to use usb c to hdmi converter to connect to the monitor. then use displayport cable to connect from egpu to the monitor. the key is to leave hdmi port on the mac mini unplug to avoid error 12. now turn on mac with egpu on and all cables connected. hold the option button. switch monitor input to hdmi. you should be able to see drive selection boot screen. then choose windows. you will see the windows flag and you will hear a sound. then switch your monitor display to displayport. it works well for me. you may need to change multiple display setting to duplicate using windows+p button.

This is how I do my Mac mini 2012+ eGPU during macOS boot to be able to select my user before FileVault login. HDMI from Mac mini and Displayport from eGPU.
Although I can login "in the dark" and just wait a few seconds, select most left user with keyboard, hit Enter and type my password and Enter again.

If I have typed right the keyboard and mouse will toggle LEDs off/on and I'm on my way.
