@sorimachi, Older Macs with Thunderbolt 1/2 don't have official software support in macOS to use eGPU. You'd need a workaround utility such as Purge Wrangler or Kryptonite to enable this feature. RX 460 has drivers in macOS and works in eGPU mode. One thing to keep in mind when buying used GPUs is that the firmware/vBIOS might have been altered so you should flash it back to the original vBIOS to make sure there's no compatibility issues.

@itsage, Thank you for you expert opinion. So i should get the 460 instead 560?

So far, i don't have a chance to try Radeon cards for my Chroma Egpu, manageable to try GTX1060(MacOS/Bootcamps Windows 10 Don't recognize the Egpu casing but card fan spinning only) GTX1050 and R960 no response too. I tried the Bootcamp using kriptonite but it won't detected my thunderbolt drive in macOS/Bootcamp too. Same with Purge-Wrangler. Hopefully to buy a used Radeon Card to try again. Would you like recommend which brand compatible with what i got now? Your advice i much appreciate. Thank you once again.

Regards

@sorimachi, RX 460 and RX 560 are very similar in macOS. Get whichever one is in better shape/value.

@traste, quick question regarding your original set-up with the RX550: you say the external display didn't work due to the core issue on that card, but were you able to get enhanced graphics through the TB cable when using the internal display on your MBP?

I'm attempting this very arrangement using a Gigabyte RX 550 2GB with a Razer Core X on a 2012 MBP 13-inch (9,2) with a i7-3520M (2.9 GHz), otherwise I COULD swap out the RX 550 for a 1050-Ti from another machine, though I got the 1050-Ti to replace the RX 550...

Hey there! Sorry, I don't really get what you're trying to achieve with the RX550. I didn't get it to work and gave up. My current setup is a RX460 + Razer Chroma X, which works like a charm.

@traste, thanks for the quick reply!

I think I'm wanting to use the eGPU in a different way than you are; it sounds like you were set on using the MBP with the eGPU and an EXTERNAL monitor, though many people also use eGPUs to supplement the iGPU graphics horsepower on the INTERNAL monitor of the MBP. There's obviously a substantial loss in graphics performance vs. having the card docked into the pcie slot of a PC in any case due to the lower bandwidth of the TB connection, which is especially relevant to my proposed TB1->TB3->TB1 set-up since the TB cable has to shuttle data back and forth to the eGPU through a single lane, but this loss is typically low on a percent-output basis for low-level cards (e.g., RX 550), so I figured I'd try this with the crappy card I have on hand.

So yeah, I guess my main question is whether "didn't get it to work" means the eGPU wasn't recognized at all when using the RX550, OR whether you couldn't get the external monitor to work despite having the RX550-eGPU recognized on the internal monitor.

Glad to hear yours is working fine with the RX460, and like I said, I might need to switch it up to the 1050Ti I have... though I'd rather not.

Cheers

I couldn't get the RX550 to work at all. It was not recognized by the system. That's why I went for the other one. Hope your setup works out!

@traste, eesh... looks like I'm stuck with the 1050Ti then... I'll be using the purge wrangler script to trick the MBP into using TB1, though the chip issue mentioned previously in your thread seems to have preempted my intentions for the RX550; I'll try nonetheless and will post my findings ASAP (getting the Razer Core X enclosure middle-late next week).

Cheers
