Hey guys,

I just bought a 1080 ti ftw3, and I tried mining crypto currencies for some hours. My setup is this new GPU, akitio thunder 2 and EVGA psu on a MacBook pro 2015. It can do almost 8 dollars/day. Not bad right? Does anyone mine using egpu?

Also, it only runs on Windows. And I use Macos for work. I'm thinking about putting my old 2011 Mac mini to run the egpu setup while I'm working/sleeping to mine. And when I wanna game I can just plug the egpu to my macbook and 😁😁.

Any thoughts on that?

Interesting. How much CPU utilization do you have? I'm wondering how much is normal computer operations impacted by that going on in the background. Any tutorial or link you can share?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

It does impact, yesterday I did a test and it got pretty slow on Windows. Thing is, I would put my Mac mini to do it. Whenever I wanna game, unplug and plug egpu on my macbook. I'll post here any results later this week

I mine using an eGPU Sonnet TB3 Enclosure with an OC RX 580, make about $5/day on it. Mine is all done in MacOS, I am running High Sierra though. But your plan to use the Mac mini is perfect and is currently what I do with my Late 09 iMac

How did you manage that!!!? When I tried to get into mining few weeks ago, I found out that it was basically impossible to make any meaningful profit with a single GPU card...  What am I missing?

@DarkPrince66 what software are you using for mining on MacOS? And what settings are you using so it uses the eGPU? Can you elaborate more on that?

OUKAY my updates:

I've been running my iMac mini 2011 with my eGPU (akitio thunder2 + EVGA PSU + EVGA 1080 ti ftw3) and I'm getting around 500MH/s mining lbry coin. Actually I'm renting for others to mine using nicehash.com. That will give me a income of around $230/month. Excluding eletricity, would be something like $180. Not bad.

Ehm.. sorry if I sound a little stupid.... but can anyone explaining this?

i know software like dnet but didn't know you can actually make money... this could be nice paying the eGPU itself eh eh

Ok, let me explain really quick and you can do your homework later:

You know bitcoin right? There's "mining", which consists of putting a machine to work on an algorithm to "mine" or "discover" bitcoins. And GPUs are awesome for this task. Cool.
Bitcoin mining ain't profitable for regular people anymore (there are companies that have a huge HUGE mining power), so its not profitable for us normal people anymore. Cool.
There are other coins that are almost like bitcoin, but there's a different algorithm for mining. For some of those, mining is still profitable. It's a high speculation market though. So with our eGPUs its still profitable to mine those coins.
There's this company called nicehash.com that makes mining easy. Basically you mine the most profitable coin at the time and you don't have to know what coin its mining. They'll pay you in bitcoin. Of course you earn a little less BUT you also don't have to watch the marked 24/7 to point your GPU to mine the right coin. They pay you in Bitcoin.

And that's what I'm doing, I bought my eGPU for gaming. While I'm not gaming, I leave it connected to my Mac Mini mining (I setup auto run, overclocked a bit, etc to be more profitable). You gotta also measure the power consumption and take that into consideration and do all the math and blablabla.
