Hello,

I am reaching out to see if anyone has noticed a change in their fan behavior (fan curve) of their eGPU setup after updating to 10.14.4. Here is what I have:

Mac Mini 2018
Sapphire RX 580
Breakaway 350

I have two 1080p monitors connected, with bootcamp, and this setup has been working great for months. Besides not being able to see each OS's loading screen, everything works fine. I can switch back and forth between OSX / W10, and I don't have to disconnect / reconnect any wires, its wonderful.

My Issue: since the start of this setup, i've been working on the Mac side, and the fans on the RX 580 are SILENT - I have almost ZERO noise. Cars honking at each other from a freeway 10 miles away are louder. After doing the 10.14.4 update last week, this changed. When the RX 580 hits 52 degrees C, the fans on the card kick on to about 50% which is very loud. Then after 5 seconds, they slow down to about 10%, which you can't hear. This occurs every 5 minutes and it's driving me nuts.

I understand the card needs to cool down, and I think prior to the mojave update, it did so by running the fans at 10%, which i never heard. I don't do any video editing, or play games on the OSX side. I just code all day, so the eGPU should barely get used.

Anyone having this issue? is the OS controlling the fans? or is the bios inside the RX 580 controlling the fans?

Thank you for your time,

Dan

UPDATE - Issue went away after installing Mojave 10.14.5 Beta 2. Fans back to normal.

I have noticed the same issue.  My fan used to be nearly silent all of the time, since the update it comes on every 30 seconds or so.  Very annoying.

I'm running 3 1920x1080 monitors with a Sonnet RX580 puck.  I have a co-worker experiencing the same issues.  Something definitely changed with this update.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through the same issue. At the same time, it helps me determine it's no my hardware failing. I have worked from bootcamp all day today so far, and have done nothing GPU intensive - not once have the fans kicked on.

This is really annoying, one of the reasons why I went with this setup and canned my PC was to have a really quiet environment. RIP the dream 🙁

I'm gonna submit a report to Apple, not sure if it will help, but worth a try, and point them to this thread.

Thanks

I decided to join Apple's Beta program. After installing 10.14.5 Beta 2, the fans are back to being super quiet. Temperature holds between 45-50 C. I hope the current fan curves stay 🙄

Thanks
