Most stable eGPU setup for macOS / Bootcamp ? Controlling RGB Razer Core macOS?

Hi,

I finally got my mac Mini to replace my gaming rig.
I always had in mind that I would get an eGPU but I also heard many "horror" stories with wakeup/sleep not working, having to downgrade windows, 5700 series performing really bad in Windows etc...

I will most likely be going with a Razer Core X / Chroma.

-I don't believe I can control the RGB in macOS. But if I setup the RGB in Windows, does it carry over to macOS?

I am looking for the most trouble-free and silent experience. What would be my best bet?
I really don't need much eGPU power when using macOS, as I mostly do fairly light stuff: xCode/Visual Studio Code/Chrome browsing and some light photo editing but I do run a 4K screen.

We have no clue if/when macOS will support BigNavi and how those drivers will fair.

-I'm considering maybe getting something like a RX570/580/590 for macOS and switching to a RTX3000 series when booting into Windows? I game so rarely, that I think maybe it's not too much of a hassle.
Issues with the RX500 series seem less common compared to the Navi GPU's, or am I imagining things?

Thanks for the help !

From the forum posts I've come across, Catalina's wake from sleep bug seems to affect most, if not all, video cards.

So, you'll want to completely turn off Mac OS Catalina's sleep function in Energy Saver under System Preferences. Allow the Mac screen saver to run instead.

Energy Saver

Find a good price on an RX580 for now, and wait for the most attractive next-gen card or console.

Thanks for the advice.

Hmm that is very problematic. I don't think I would want to not have the sleep function working by having an eGPU.

That issue alone might make way reconsider my purchase. I will make some further research on that topic and see if I can find a card that doesn't have this problem or wait until Big Sur is released to see if there are some improvements.

Going for a cheap RX580 and waiting to see the new generation is probably the best solution indeed. If I can figure out this sleep problem.

Catalina's wake-from-sleep issue is a general bug within the OS.

It's not specifically related to eGPUs.

I saw a user report that the issue was fixed in the GM version of 10.15.6.

Now that the official version of 10.15.6 has dropped via Software Update, maybe this will soon be confirmed.
