Sorry-- new to this whole thing.

Mojave 10.14.5, Mac mini 2018, 6 core i7- trying to get an msg Vega 56 running for it, but it won't detect. On a hot plug everything starts up like I think it should.. if you click on the egpu icon it tells me there is no GPU detected, and then after a couple seconds the icon just disappears.

the system report shows the Razer Core x in the pcie tab, but in the graphics tab it shows the egpu, listing it as a display. it can tell the product is AMD but that's about it. the card does not show up in the about this Mac section.

I can't get any video signal at all out of the Vega. any display connected to it shows no input.

What I have tried:
I've zapped the nvram a couple times
reset SMC
partitioned my drive and did a fresh install of Mojave. when booting from the fresh install there was no change.
tried 3 different TB3 cables
I'm currently making a bootable high Sierra drive to see if it's Mojave update related

Got any ideas?

@kenz85 Mac Mini 2018 cannot run High Sierra. Check your power cables - ensure they are correctly connected to GPU. Ensure GPU is properly placed into the PCIe slot. Verify if GPU works in a PC.

power cables are all good. I have checked those a couple times. same with the slot. I have been wondering about the card myself.. I'll check on that.

here is what I think is strange.. based off of everything I have read here and other places, my mini is behaving exactly like what you see when you plug an egpu into a tb2 or tb1 computer that hasn't been scripted with the purge-wrangler script.... except my computer is tb3.

It sounds like a hardware issue if you have reinstalled macOS... do you have another Mac to test or GPU?
Sounds like its being detected then something is killing it - such as a power or cable issue.

Yeah I got to test it on another Mac yesterday.. and it also had a fresh install,  and it behaved the same, so it's definitely hardware. At this point I would be surprised if it was the cables or power supply because I tried a used sonnet first, and then bought a new Razer core x. Same symptoms, so I think it's the card.

Also, I've read some people have had issues with the thunderbolt 3 cables that come with the core x. Do the official apple ones hold up, or should I go for something like a Belkin?

I think that this would work if you could downgrade to 10.14.4.  Mine worked fine until I updated to Mojave 10.14.5.  I have to put it to sleep with keyboard shortcuts (mac and display) then sometimes I logout with a keyboard shortcut and the login scree reappears.  It never did this in 10.14.4.

My history of the issue is here:

having this same problem with akitio node and RX 580. RX 570 works perfectly in macOS but 580 shows up as “display” as well. 580 works flawlessly on bootcamp. MacBook is a 16” Pro
