Hi!

My setup:
Macbook 16 (amd 5500m, oof)
ROG XG STATION 2 with Vega 64 installed

First of all, I had same configuration with my old mbp 2013 via thunderbolt 3 -> 2 -> mbp + purge wrangler.
Second: Connecting after booting works flawlessly on macOS. Error 12 on windows on hot boot at spinning windows logo.

I uninstalled purge wrangler and made a file transfer.

Same configuration worked on my old mbp 2013 flawlessly.

MacBook freezes under these conditions:
* Connecting @ Cold Boot
* Connecting @ choosing boot device (ALT), even mouse freezes
* Connecting @ Windows Logo without spinning circle
* Connecting @ Windows Desktop @ Hot Boot @ Right side (EVERYTHING DISCONNECTING, BUT WINDOWS CONTINUES WORKING, EVEN KEYBOARD DISCONNECTING)

What I've tried to get it working:
* Reset NVRAM, SMC
* Tried all cables (original apple store thunderbolt 3, thunderbolt 3 came with egpu)
* Tried updating EGPU firmware (failed, can't connect to it in windows)
* DDU with installing bootcampdrivers.com (only installing drivers for 5500m)

Thanks!

Update 2:

OH MY GOD, you will not believe what’ve worked.

I had a 2 hour call with Apple Support and they didn’t help, by the way.

So I tried to update BIOS (yes, macs also have bios).

If you have the same problem, just hold OPTION + CMD + R, it will download the latest recovery + bios. Done, freezes are no more.

So now I just have to fix error 12 and I’m good to go.

Update 3:

after some time and restarts it stops working. Again.

I was so close to fixing error 12, thanks to EFI loader, but now I’m stuck again.

Trying to do this fix again.

this is super stupid.

Update 4:

now it doesn’t work at all.

i’m devastated.

i was never so frustrated with new stuff.

Update 5:

Turns out you have to have external power (MacBook charge for example) when you’re using EGPU, even if you have external power support on your EGPU.

lesson learned.

Emotional rollercoaster ended.

Everything works flawlessly.

Idk why though I can’t boot without external power now, as I could before.

i think we’ll never know
