MacOS Big Sur‌ 11.4 update adds Intel Mac support for AMD's 6000-Series Navi GPUs.

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

This is great news! (or at least it will be when most of us can actually get our hands on a new card)

Did Apple also release new Boot Camp drivers or have they only updated them for MacOS?

I just checked on my 2018 Mac mini and macOS 11.4 Beta 1 (20F5046g) only includes drivers for Navi21 [RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6900 XT]. RX 6700 XT is Navi22 and unfortunately doesn't work yet.

@itsage, thanks for the info! I really hope Apple adds support for a 6700 XT but I have a bad feeling they wont. Of course my 6700 XT should be delivered to me tomorrow. 🙂

@norcom, I'm sure Navi22 drivers will be added in due time. Also I checked with my 2020 M1 Mac mini and no ARM drivers for third-party graphics cards in macOS 11.4 still.

This is the full output of AMD PCI IDs macOS 11.4 Beta 1 supports. Adding RX 6700 XT ID [73df] to AMDRadeonX6000.kext and AMDRadeonX6000HWServices.kext may help but I would say to wait for future builds.

I'm assuming this would require to disable the System Integrity Protection?

@norcom, I also ordered that card. As it was the only card, I could get my hands on. Everything else (officially supported), was not available from anywhere.

Let's hope 11.5 could add Navi22 support. We should try and run them via windows on bootcamp (Windows should have drivers) for the cards atleast.

6700 XT works under Bootcamp if you jump through the regular hoops. I'm using the pci.sys fix with latest AMD drivers and a Windows version I haven't updated in a LONG time. I played some Half Life Alyx with it. Not sure I noticed much performance gains with the 6700 XT over the 5700 XT it replaced. But I also upgraded my VR headset from Odyssey+ to Reverb G2 and the extra resolution doesn't help with FPS comparison. The #1 reason I went with a 5700 was becase MacOS supported it and I hoped the 6700 would get support but after this last beta I'm skeptical. I feel like Apple has no reason to support low-end GPUs for the "pro" Macs.

Overall, I felt there was too much stutter on the MacBook 16 i9 with this card in HL Alyx; at least without lowering the graphic settings. On the left side I'm running the eGPU and the right a TB3 NVME enclosure where I store the games. So I threw the 6700 XT into an old i7-4790k box I have laying around. Got SLIGHTLY better performance but the card's just not very impressive. Perhaps the CPU's the bottle neck but I'm too lazy to run tests. I'll probably pickup a faster proc/mobo if a deal comes up and build a dedicated VR rig. Or maybe I could score a deal on a 6800/6900.
