It works, but it has no drivers. So you'll get the desktop, but the software rendering is sluggish, at least in 4K.
Anything using Metal or OpenCL will complain there's no compatible device present. Read somewhere 10.14.4 might have support.

Got my Radeon VII and Razer Core X.

Can confirm, doesn't work.

  • Called Razer, they were not very helpful.
  • Called AMD, their Radeon VII team told me (as I see here) to wait for MacOS 10.14.4.

Currently plugging the Core X into the MBP with Radeon VII inside yields "No GPU detected" or a hard shutdown of the Mac, complete with a few seconds of 100% RPM on both internal fans... never seen (heard) that before.

Anyway...... we wait.

Thanks for sharing very promising, let’s hope for next beta!

Has anyone tried this driver and obtained Xconnect support for Radeon VII in Windows?

I can wait for Apple to bake in support but would be good to be able to get the RVII for my windows laptop.

I'm pretty shure I read somewhere, that the support of VII is planned, but not yet implemented. The VII is also not listed under supported graphic cards in driver release notes.

Edit: Seems that AMD has released a new driver for the VII (date of today), with the same version (Adrenalin 19.2.1) but WHQL certified. I assume that nothing has changed in the package (still no eGPU support).

I got it working in BootCamp Win10! So I'm pretty sure that it will work on a Windows laptop, too.

since i don't have a gaming monitor with free sync ... i only get 60 fps max in 1440p ... but average fps in high / very high settings in the high 40 to high 50 fps ... so pretty good for my taste... better than with my GTX960 4GB I had before in this system.

so here is my (long) video about my Radeon VII experience with my 2010 MacPro with a Windows 10 Bootcamp system... for Gaming and Video editing and so on...

Nice! I just bought it 2 days ago while i was in Vegas, got it from Fry's, however it kinda sucks that i didn't get the deal of the 3 games. So were you able to make it work or you just figure that there is a new driver but it is not linked or had a bad device id?

UPDATE: I got the 3 games, just had to email the store and they replied with the AMD Reward code.

@itsage you da man!  (Or person!). Look forward to hearing the details and if you think it Radeon VII will be officially supported in 10.14.4 or it's a hack/workaround to make it work.

Hey @ikir,  I too purchased the Radeon VII & Razor Core with the plans to rock my '18 MBP and more specifically Davinci Resolve/C4D/AE....  and possibly some gaming when work is done.    I initially had HighSierra on it and it kinda recognized it as an unknown.. so I had hope ... then dove into eGPU.io (#amazingresource) and am caught up and waiting patiently until our day comes...  thanks for verifying that I'm not crazy for buying combo (#hadtohaveit).   Eyes/ears=Open.    Best, Ron

I am exactly in the same boat and have been checking this thread every day for any good news. Currently running Radeon VII on Razor Core on 18 MacBook Pro but via Bootcamp. Games run good but my biggest complaint is if the computer sleeps or shuts down while the eGPU is connected the fans on the Radeon VII card will run at full speed, and f I don't disconnect or shut down the eGPU the fans will run for hours. Anyone currently running it on bootcamp and has similar issues? More importantly, is there a fix or solution to this because I hate to keep disconnecting and  reconnecting my eGPU? I have updated the bios of the card but that did not fix it.

@barretts Have the Radeon VII on a Razer Core X, and the fans runs at full speed too if system sleeps or shuts down. Only way is to disconnect TB cable, or power off Razer Core X. @juan_c_yunis commented updating the firmware helps with this issue, but I've updated and it's still the same.

Funnily, the Radeon VII in a Mantiz Venus, paired with a Thinkpad X1 Tablet g3 works. The fans don't blast away when the system goes to sleep or shutdown. I'm not sure what to make of it too.

I was using a Vega 64 in the Razor Core X a few weeks back and did not run into this issue.

@barretts the Vega 56/64 works well in the core X, it's what I'm using too till the driver situation get sorted. Hopefully when the official driver drops it'll fixfthis full fan blast issue too.

I have the same problem when I connect the radeon VII.
When using the RTX 2080, that doens't happen.
At least under macOS.
I expect that it is because of the drivers not being up to par. Once 10.14.4 comes out, I expect it to be fixed.

Not sure why, but this doesn't happen to me anymore since i updated the BIOS, could it be that it works different with a Mac Mini 2018?

@robin_martin i just installed it and no luck, i had to manually inject the device id and it is still recognized as a vega10 unknown prototype.

@juan_c_yunis how's stability on MacOS? Am keen to try out the Radeon VII again since I got a new card from RMAing my first one, but if it still crashes etc I can't use it as a daily driver.

I can confirm what @juan_c_yunis said. Same as previous 10.14.4 betas, the PCI ID 66af is only found in two kexts, AMDRadeonX5000HWServices.kext and AMD10000Controller.kext. In order to make it work, we need to inject the PCI ID into AMDRadeonX5000.kext to borrow Vega 10 drivers. Official macOS drivers for the Radeon VII may not arrive in 10.14.4 public release at this rate.

My hope is that a variant of the Radeon VII is going to make it in the new Mac Pro. WWDC is 3 months away so Apple probably is taking their time optimizing the drivers.

@itsage makes sense, however i do expect AMD pushing Apple to make it work, according to one of the users here, he contacted AMD and he said that it would be supported for 10.14.4.

@kelvin_tan @ikir yes it is still unstable, i just had a freeze and had to reboot. So let's hope it gets fixed soon.

I played around with the kext updating process to make sure my rig was working but I haven't stress tested it yet. I might throw some real video editing projects at it this week and see how it handles.
